It has nothing to do with 9-11.
I had a Sudanese-Ethiopian girlfriend in NYC for six months. She was from Khartoum, and she was always mentioning the possibility of honor killings if anyone from Khartoum saw her dating and having a regular boyfriend outside the institution of marriage. |

Potically incorrect to bring up but a true one nonetheless. |

The only bigotry here is the hatred of female freedom evident in a culture-to-be-unnamed. Also, your willingness to totally accept that some people just get what they got comin. That is quite bigoted too. |

The country in need of the biggest reform is Pakistan. The entire system there from the police to the judiciary is a party to the wide spread and systematic abuse of the nations women. Action only seems to occur there in the aftermath of global media attention which of course only draws notice to the tip of the ice berg.
It is the case that most women are reluctant to report cases of abuse and rape due to fear of encountering similar treatment at the hands of the police. And following this, the same said woman could be marked for murder by her family for having brought shame upon them.
Events like these are not exaggerated or unique but rather widespread and part of the culture. It is not accurate to blame Islam, which does abhorr such treatment of women, but rather the culture that has developed around the misinterpretation of Islam that has evolved in Pakistan. In terms of a human rights cause that deserves to be pursued by global civil society, the sitution in Pakistan is surely among the most urgent. Get educated about the situation and get involved in whatever way possible. |
