So, I go to Nonghyup ATM this evening to get out money ( I bank there), and am able to check my balance, but when I try to withdraw money, a red light blinks, some Korean comes across the screen and spits my card back out with a receipt (that only has the amount I was trying to withdraw). I assume there is no money left, so I proceed to try the other 2 machines. Same response.

My husband then tries his card, and they EAT it! Thieves! Why would they eat a card from their own bank?

So, my question is this...have they frozen our accounts? What's the deal? Some adjossi was able to withdraw money right before we tried, and some dude came in and took more out of the machine we had just tried.

What the feck? Evil or Very Mad

Seriously. What gives. Why would this happen? And since it's Saturday, no chance to ask the school about it until Monday.

UPDATE: I went to the bank yesterday, and they could only tell me that it was a 'system error'. No other explanation was offered, and I couldn't get anything else from them. The money had been put back into my account so they didn't see any problem with it. Didn't explain why 2 Korea guys were able to get money out before and after we tried.

This happened to me when I lived in Japan. I panicked and thought I was out of cash but was later told that the machine either had a limit on each transaction (and I was asking for more), or was unable to give certain bills.

Hope this is the case for you, sounds likely to be. Can u try again and ask for less?

Good luck.

Val

"Eating" the card is a form of fraud prevention, akin to a limited number of password attempts for a website login.
Usually it happens if too many unsuccessful attempts have been made, especially regarding a PIN.

I am sure I entered the correct pin, because I was able to check my balance. And I had only asked for 50,000. And my husband has a separate account and it did the same thing to him, but ate his card at the end.

I was thinking maybe they froze out accounts for some reason? We work at the same school.

Anyway, it is bloody annoying and frustrating.

Could be that your boss deposited checks that show you have a virtual balance, but can't be withdrawn until the checks are valid.

But that doesn't explain why your husband's card was eaten. If he were to punch in the wrong pin number 3 times that would happen. Doesn't seem, however, like anyone entered a wrong pin number...

Strange.

I just went to my local Nonghyup ATM, & tried to draw out 100,000 at 9.55 pm. (They close at 10pm)

A smiley face with 2 apples, a carrot & zucchini, came up. No cash. I then went to Family Mart, & successfully drew out 70k.

i've lost count of the number of times my atm cards have been eaten by machines here - ! Mad

i don't get bothered about it anymore - just wait for a korean to come into the atm area, point and say "my card!!" and point to the phone and they are always more than happy to call the number there. in about 20 minutes, sometimes less, a guy in a uniform will drive up on a scooter, unlock the machine and give me my card back.

no telling what happened to yours but always be aware, someone WILL come and give you your card back if you use the phone in the booth there.

as for WHY it happened - well hope you'll come back and post something interesting next week - ok? Wink

When I had an account at Woori bank, they would turn off my ability to use my ATM card if I didn't update my bank book every 3 months. As I simply used my card and never used my little bank book, when my card wouldn't work I had to go into the bank and have them do something in the computer to make it work again. Quite annoying.

You're not alone. It happened to me twice in one day once.

And then there are those times I've waited at an ATM at night for a technician to come from another part of town to help me....

I wouldn't be stressing. Korean ATMs are shockingly hopeless.

My card didn't get eaten, but what happened was that right as the ATM was going to give me my money, it rebooted. Yes, it went thru all the motions and just as the money was about to get spit out, the ATM blue screen of death! It also debited my account the money was supposed to give me. I had to have a Korean go with me to the bank, and the teller actually had to go out to the ATM and reset the damn thing.

The upshot was, after 45 minutes, I finally got my money. Ghod, what a pain in the ass that was!

I had the same problem last Friday too (8 days ago) in the evening at about 8pm.

Nonghyup and woori both gave the same treatment. Not only to me but everyone who was qeueing.

I don't think its anything to worry about. The banks all go "offline" at about that time sometimes for a couple hours. because they are working on and repairing the system. Taking a breather or whatever. Don't worry, the money you requested has not been deducted. just try again the next morning.

yeah, i forgot to mention the time an atm machine konked out on me and died - that was some years ago - it was awful!! lots of lights and sounds, my card came back after some minutes and the receipt said it gave me my money - but it didn't!

fortunately the atm was a keb one where i had my account and i went to my branch and knew the manager who spoke some english - but it was my foreign card i used when it did that - he tried to insist i get the money from them - but i said it was YOUR atm that broke and told me the money was taken and it wasn't, after i threw a fit he gave me the money.

no WAY i was gonna get on the phone long distance international, no less, and try and convince them i didn't get my money!!

whoa that was awful!
