If you live in North Korea, they'll restrict your contact with Koreans and force you to fraternize with foreigners. |

hey, i know as well as the next person that you have to take everything in the lonely planet with a pinch of salt, but it does say you should not even contemplate touching north korean women for any reason. therefore, if this is true, i imagine the prospect of marrying a north korea lady can be swiftly kicked into touch.
good luck again gwow. keep us up to date if you can.
take care. |

The more I think about this, the less I like it.
I have to wonder what your thoughts are on the DPRK's government? Knowing what I know about them (which isn't much), I don't think I could work for them. I might feel like I was complicite with the regime.
Do you feel comfortable working for an organization with the history of the N. Korean Communist party (or whatever it's called)?
What do you want out of this experience?
I'm not passing judgement; it's your decision. If you do it, I'm sure it'll be an amazing experience. I'm interested in what you have to say.
ps. I'm going to speculate wildly and guess that it's hard to do a runner in N Korea.

Consider this:
Of the American Korean war defectors that stayed in North Korea: all but one of them stayed past 1960 and he married a kidnapped Japanese national. Jenkins is his name.
The others went back to America or moved to China no Korean wives.
Think about that
I think any foreigner going to North Korea to work for cash from the government is supporting the most vile regime on planet earth. It is nothng less comparable to volunteering to teach sonder kommando English during the holocaust.

| That brings up a good question: who in fact is paying your salary? North Korea, some other gov't (perhaps GB),or some NGO? |

| I don't think it matters who's paying his salary. GWOW will be playing by their rules and that's all that matters. |

Jenkins defected in 1965. |

Then I rest my case. None of the American defectors (surviving) are still there - and Jenkins could only couple with a kidnapped Japanese woman.
My point stands - thanks for the correction though.

There was a report by a guard from one of the goolags who defected and how he said that he supervised some old westerners in their 70's on road construction up in the North somewhere.
I also read that of the defectors during the Korean war there was only one who was ideologically attracted to communisim. He was pretty much convinced that it was the ideal way to live. The questions and discussions he had with his soldier buddies made them all uncomfortable. He was sincere, so they couldn't handle it. |

I have heard through the grapevine that he is now not going.
For reasons you'll have to ask him. |
