Had a talk today with someone who said she'd read that in January, hogwons would no longer be able to provide free housing for foreign staff (i.e., we'll all be paying for our own apts). Can't believe I missed this... IS IT TRUE? Details please!

Thanks

It's true. And starting July 1, 2004, all our wages will be reduced to a million Won a month. By 2006, we will not only have to pay our own rent, but pay the school just to teach there.

Please - SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY - the whole bit of eliminating subsidized housing sounds screwy to me, too, but hey, this is Korea... you just never know....

Ok, serious answer. No, it is not true in general, but it maybe true for that particular person at her/his particular school. If you do a search on this topic in any forum you will find zero, zip, nada, nothing about changing regulations. Hope this helps. Very Happy

If they try to do that, their ESL market will fall flat on its face.

Why? Most people I know who have been here past their first contract all have their own housnig anyway. Besides, every once in a while a thread comes up where people say that they want to choose their own housing.

yeah but if you have your own house then you should be getting a housing allowance.

the house isn't exactly free to begin with. it's part of a standard contract and therefore part of the overall income.

just a thought

Besides, there are no laws, policy, regulation, or the like that would regulate what Hagwons could or can do anyhow. There isn't an organization that could implement any policy. Hagwons are independent organizations that give what they want within the contstraint of the law and there has been no law passed here on the ROK that would support any such forced compliance.

even if they have to pay rent, i believe most ESL instructors would still teach...as it would STILL be better than the McJobs they are only qualfied for back in their homelands. also, i would think this move would actually weed out the pleasure-seeking underqualified free-loaders who aren't qualified to teach in korea anyway.

It's standard but not law to provide housing. It's more of a custom than a requirement.
