For those who have re-signed with a public school, have you been successful in negotiating better benefits, such as more vacation, increased pay, not having to stay at school when there aren't any classes, etc.?

SMOE's policies are set, including vacation days, the pay scale and teaching hours. One high-level teacher last year at the top of the pay scale was not allowed to get a raise. SMOE promised more benefits, like vacation. But since the teacher didn't get it in writing, SMOE never followed through.

Negotiations with schools can sometimes be made, but most of the issues you are asking about are set in the contract and governed by SMOE.

From what I understand with GEPIK, when you renew your contract, you are doing it directly with your school. So I guess you could have more room for negotiation. Not sure how well it works in practice though.

i wonder if this will change with the new regs, people leaving, etc.


edit: and are there any EPIK-ers that have managed to do it?

Increased vacation time and increased pay. But then again I don't work in SMOE, I work in GEPIK.

Yeah, asked for the whole month of december off. Basically in 3 years working there I had seen my family for 2 days. I think they could appreciate it wasn't an unreasonable request. And of course a raise.

My experience is having to negotiate for what is in the contract.

Principal says flat-out NO to everything first, then has a couple of meetings with me and allows me to have what I'm entitled too.
I am then meant to feel privileged at the generosity.

I had 2 weeks vacation left, and if I had resigned I was due 2 more.
I asked when would be the best time to take 4 weeks off, and she said I couldn't get 4 weeks off.

2 meetings and and two days later, she agreed to 4 weeks off and 3 weeks of camp.

I refused, simply because of the attitude.
Hope they get a drunken bum, with a personality complex next year. I tried.

Interesting, as I'm also with GEPIK. I was under the impression that we are only entitled to the standard 100,000 won / month increase after one year. Are you saying you managed to negotiate more? If you don't mind me asking--How?

Your first year you are tied to the GEPIK program/contract/system. However, when you renew, you are no longer bound by GEPIK. Your school essentially rehires you directly without GEPIK being the middleman.

Due to that reasoning, you can negotiate your contract. Of course, if you make outrageous demands then you will get shot down. However, its not unreasonable to ask for proper compensation for your efforts.

You know what you are entitled to by the effort you put into your job.

Do you get paid for your camps?
