2nd contract: got it with no probs.

3rd contract: no severance pay at my uni.

3 years at the same hagwon. Got it my first two years and coming to the end of my third (March). Will extend if asked, get my severance, money for vacation not taken, plane ticket money, send him up *beep* creek without a paddle with the tax office, report to pension that one teacher is not paying, report to immi that that same teacher doesn't have a diploma, and then do a midnight run.

Severance is not a gift. It's a right.

1st Contract (with Skyzen Language Institute, Incheon): They refused to pay severance but pretended they were "just waiting until the Labor Board case with the other teacher was finished because it is the same case." Of course, I had not filed a case with Labor as I was waiting for the "other teacher" to win his case--he obviously would win because of their egregious acts--before filing my case. We both got the severance pay almost three months after the end of the contract.

2nd Contract (with the public schools in Busan): Got it on the very day it was due with zero problems.

3rd Contract (with the public schools in Busan): I have no doubt whatsoever that I will get it the very day it is due (February 29, 2008) with zero problems.

I prefer to let mine accrue, as it is based upon the salary at payout time.

And I'm sure your boss would prefer to let it "acrue," too. "Yes, acrue," Mr. Kim thinks as he twiddles his fingers.

I have to remind my school every year. It's always like it's the first time they ever heard of anyone getting this, although every working Korean gets it. They never make much of a big deal about it at the end of the day. Just takes them a couple months.

I had a hokwon try to get out of paying it...

I was told there would be no problem a month before the contract ended but on the last day I was told that the director didn't have the money. They told me that they would pay the month's salary and the airfare but that is all that they had and that pension and severence were too much; and they were sorry.

They ended up paying the rest that night, but not until after a long and unpleasant arguement. It turned out that they had the money all along but didn't want to pay it.

First year it was late a week or two. It was finally paid when I needed to send a fax, and when askd what for I said it was to the police. It was actually a totally unrelated matter, but I got paid the next day. Second year it was in my bank account the day before my contract ended. I stipulated in my contract to have it paid my last teachng day this year, which is three days before my contract ends.

And what's tghe advantage of letting it accrue? is it gaining inetrest? It could be...

That's a good one even though you didn't intend it for what it did.

Really though, you could walk around the lobby with your boss around pretending to talk to the tax office using tax terminology. Repeat "tax" and "taxes" several times to peak your boss's interest. It really gets them on their toes. I did it the other day. He's like, "Who was that?" Ha!

It would save them money to give it to me every year, due to yearly salary increases. At my last university position, I left after fourteen years and had a very healthy severance pay on my way out.
