-I went to gangwon land with my school teachers for an end of year celebration trip. Anyway we were there about one hour. Nobody won except me. But watching the playing style of roulette was bizarre. People threw down like 15-20 chips on that many numbers. In other words if they won...they were making as much money as they would have by betting rouge and noir or odds and evens. And they all write down the numbers like it makes a difference. Out of an entire table of about 8 players, only 2, including me, made bets on colors.
-I won enough to buy a TOASTER OVEN! French Bread Pizza here I come! |

Maybe they just don't understand the game (or the odds). I bet you aren't a good GO player and would make moves that would be considered ludicrous to a good player. Just a thought. They could also be idiots. |

You know I remember reading a book on gambling. it said
"If you don't know the rules you should not play the game. It is amazing how much a casino makes by people hitting on 19 and 20 in blackjack. And craps? Some people think you just throw the dice and hope they give you money." |

I find Koreans to be, on the whole (on average, so don't accuse me of overgeneralizing) to be weak willed.
Not knowing the game is one thing. Not being able to quit is another. Look at how fast those Sea Story places cleaned out many-a-ajosshi's pockets before they were forcefully shut down. |

how can someone not understand the rules of roulette?!
1) bet on a number or a group of numbers
2) your odds are proportional to the number of hits that correspond to your bet, with the odds in favor of the house, depending upon whether there's 1 or 2 zeros
3) spin the wheel
4) it's RANDOM, so unless you're going to keep track of a million or so spins (to find the slow spots on the wheel) and have enough money to bet enough times to make it statistically significant, you might as well just play for fun
i doubt your friends were that much worse than you... you got lucky! |

When I pass by the roulette table , I put down the mininum or a little more on my favorite number. I have won this way for years. Vegas, Manila , a few Native American casinos.
If I am going to stay awhile, I play four numbers with on chip. If you are going to play colors, you may as well play blackjack.
As far as Asians. I will never forget the swarms of Taiwanese heading over to Macau on gambling runs. The nonsmoking airport actually allowed at the time, nervous ( or distraught) gamblers to smoke near Macau Air boarding area! |

I could care less about the "are Asians bad gamblers" argument, but I'd like to point out that a quick Wiki search shows he moved to Hong Kong at a young age and America by 10-11. You spend most of your life in the US and are an American citizen, you're American. The OP, I hope, is referring to people raised in Asian cultures, not arguing that merely having Asian blood makes you a bad gambler. |

my house is in/right next to east st.louis,ILLinois. the gambling casino there has expanded yet again. it never failed to amaze me the number of asians in that place. oftentimes it seemed as if they were the majority. where did they all come from? that anyone would come to east st.louis to gamble stuns me to this day (there are other casinos around st.louis in much beter places). i don't gamble, but i'd go with friends. the amount of money thrown away on stooopid bets was boogling. saw one guy flush away 3k in about five minutes because he wanted to get comped a room for the night. |

IMHO, anyone playing against the house (without cheating, of course) is a bad gambler! a good gambler invests money when the odds of return are in their favor, e.g. when the market is low, when there is a chance of a commodity becoming scarce, when they have better information than the other party, etc... people who go to casinos to try and make money are ALL idiots... you should go to the casino for the fun of it, and if you win that's a bonus! |

Everytime I hit a casino in the U.S., Asians are always overrepresented. I also remember firehouses that had casinos, and you could always count on Koreans to be there. Several people I knew around me had serious gambling problems, and had borrowed big from friends to feed their bad habit.
I remember a Korean-American guy telling me that he was approached in Atlantic City by a Korean guy asking for money, because he had lost all of his. |

I don't dispute your statement. However, on the US Census, Johnny Chan checks the box that says, "Asian/Pacific Islander".
The OP didn't clarify what he meant by his "Subject" heading so I gotta assume he means all Asians in General.
Men "The Master" Nguyễn and Minh "Pokerhost" Nguyen are also accomplished poker players.
I'm a Korean American and I'm pretty damn good at Poker. All other games are just chance. Blackjack required no thought whatsoever. You either play the right way or piss off everyone at the table.
The only other game that the player can affect the outcome is craps. And I don't play craps. |
