Yeah, a song "Barak the magic negro" on a hard-right talk show is wildly inappropriate. That is the context.

Oh, but its ok when a left-wing writer at the LA Times prints it? Typical liberal double talk.

To some it is bad. You don't want to offend like Rush....do you?

Rush, like Obama, is a grown man and can take it. I'm simply surprised that such nonsense, in modern America, hits mainstream radio. I had no idea.

I did not read the LA Times piece. Was the term 'magic negro' being used as a pejorative in the way it was against Obama? If yes, then both are equally bad, if not, you are typifying typical right-wing obliviousness to issues of race.

Ummm...that is from the linked article.

Exactly. It's credited to Spike Lee, for Ghod's sake.

thepeel, non-Americans who have not grown up in the U.S. and consequently have not gained a very accurate feel for the myriad subtleties of the racial dynamic, invariably get things wrong, no matter how smart they think they are.

You guys just do not know.

I referenced that earlier, when I called myself a "naive Canuck".

Yes, I saw that. That naivete goes beyond calling a black man "bro".

Well, that was a force of habit from that time. Likely the influence of Entourage benders on campus. I'd prolly pull the 'dude' now. 'bro' sounds too frat.

Anyhow, yeah. Dogbert. I guess a right-wing nutter playing a song about a 'magic negro' is cool and I just don't get the ins and outs of Americana.

I would file a black guy taking offense at being called "Bro" under "His problem, not mine". If anyone was interested.

Spike Lee made up the term. He may have been right in his analysis and he may have been wrong. Sydney Poitier and Whoopi Goldberg took roles that Lee later criticized. Did they feel they were perpetuating a stereotype? I don't know.

It's one thing for Spike Lee to open a discussion in a serious venue (film criticism) about stereotypes and quite another for Rush Limbaugh to air a song that is meant to be an attack on Obama using the term. In one portion of the clip, Obama is wearing what looks to me like Klan robes.

It's offensive, but politics has always been a dirty business ...

As long as Obama is seen to have a real shot at getting the nomination there's sure to be a lot more "satirical" stuff targeting any perceived weaknesses.

Presumably, Rush and company already have pre-packaged sexist/anti-feminist/ anti Bill getting blow-jobs under the desk in Oval Office material to use against Hillary - so they need to cleverly draw negative attention to Obama's race, name, past drug use, Muslim ties - and anything else they can dig up.

I vaguely remember Ronald Reagon supporters in a California governor's race against Pat Brown using "IF IT'S BROWN, FLUSH IT!" bumper stickers ...

If Obama gets the nomination, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of those recycled ...

It remains to be seen if VP Cheney continues to make regular appearances on Rush's show ...

I wouldn't recommend calling any black guy you don't know "dude" - which originally referred to fancy-dressing cowboy wannabes.

It's too close to the term "boy" - which is not tolerated at all by some blacks. "Man" (or "sir") would be safer ...

Some blacks? Wow, I'd like to see someone try to call any black man in New York "boy". Actually, I'd pay to see it.

Yeah, even for Rush, that was more than being simply a bit cheeky.

I think that's the standard right-wing view of Obama's Church. Personally, I think it makes sense why Obama would go to a Church heavily emphasizing African origins, THE MAN'S FATHER WAS KENYAN.

When I read the thread title I thought maybe the Canadian band had a new concept album. Too bad.

Now that's funny right there.
