i heart my creative zen vision m!
it's 60gb and is just lovely. it's got sleek design and touchscroll, so no moving, and thus breakable, parts.
it can do video, photos, and fm radio as well, but i don't use those functions. i just need music.
battery life is about 8 hours, and i do find it a bit of a pain in the ass to charge. a charger doesn't come with, i can't just plug it into the wall. iirc, chargers are about $80 cdn. i charge it using the usb and plugging it into my computer, which means i have to leave my computer on, plus it's slow. so charging, yeah, could be better.
i bought it in august in canada, and i paid about $350 for it, i think. i could be wrong. pricey yes, but i love it.
i like the functionality of it, it has a really easy-to-use menu system and has pretty background too. super easy to navigate. uploading is a piece of cake, and i can u/l and d/l to someone else without worrying about software. i can also delete stuff directly, i don't have to do it through my computer.
i highly recommend it!

How much storage do you want? You can get a 160 gb ipod classic for a reasonable price. It is the highest capacity player I know of at that size and price.

i'm anti-ipod, primarily because of the proprietary software. you have to use itunes, and it comverts your mp3's to itunes, which is a pain when it comes to sharing with non-ipod users. of course you can install a program to override that, but seriously, why should you have to?
but yeah, 160gb would be sweet!

iTunes doesn't convert your mp3s, it is simply a program for playing and syncing media with the iPod, and a basic player for music. It doesn't convert anything.

really? okay. i am quite sure that it does make it very difficult to share with non-ipod/itunes users though.

This is a common misnomer.

Why would Apple want to alter your music? Apple has been at the forefront of mp3 player technology and newer forms of music players/distributon. And legally how could they alter your music It is true that music purchased from the iTunes store can only be played on your authorized computer or iPod via iTunes. This is a DRM issue, it was never what Apple wanted and they have actively been fighting for DRM-free content for years. I am assuming this is what you were thinking about. if a person adds or rips their music onto their computer and adds it to iTunes it is just a normal mp3.

Tonnes of players work fine on apple computers without iTunes, including creative players, archos players and many others.

creative does not officially offer software to sync its players to macs. There is a program, something like xjnb, I don't remember the exact name that will allow a mac to recognize creative products. i tried it once with my creative zen. It froze the first time I used so I haven't tried it again since. This isn't a big deal for me because I also have a windows desktop.

My library is now over 60Gb, and as a result I have had to move to an iPod. I did have a 60Gb iPod using Rockbox, alternative firmware for iPods, but this is not yet ported to the newer large capacity iPods.

I have found iTunes good to use, with only a few problems.

It does not change the music on my computer, but when it copies it across to the iPod it does change the filename, and allocates the once well organised folder structure into a random one, and uses a database to keep track of what it has done.

This is to prevent you from copying your music to other computers. However, as it does not alter the song tag information, there are programs that can reconstruct the song file names and a folder organisation based on those tags. This is, however a pain.

Further, your iPod it tied to your computer. You cant use another computer to add music to your iPod, without either deleting all the music on it, or waiting. I say waiting, because you need to copy the music to your iPod in disk mode, then take it back to the "home" computer, copy the music to that, point iTunes to the new music and have it sync back to your iPod.

The only time iTunes will delete music off your iPod (without your consent)is if you have iTunes set to auto-sync. Are you sure you can't connect to another computer and use iTunes (in manual mode) to copy songs? Seems like that should work.
