what an awesome class we had today! nearly magical for a handsome ass English educator that has been numbed nearly the past 10 years from teaching nothing less than apathetically motivated, merely making the grade oriented, college and university students.
it happened all of the sudden but lasted until the end of class. midway into the hourly session, my students seemed to be in deep concentration, nearly lulled by their projects, seated in groups and obediently adhering to the English only rule when i felt a certain stoic surrender to their situation at hand. i instinctively struggled to snap them out of it by telling knock, knock jokes, and, why did the chicken jokes, but still, that unconcerned stare in their eyes seem to look right through me and pierce the sheer essence of my ELT soul and purpose.
momentarily, i was inwardly panicking when it miraculously occured to my handsome, ingenious ass, why not challenge them with a simple brain teaser? thats when it happened! a student seated at the rear of the classroom -that was fortunately absent the day before- decided to make an attention grabbing effort to solve the brain teaser with a quick, yet vocally loud and unintentionally peer-challenging, stimulatingly witty response. but, he was wrong. the other students naturally felt his error was their opportunity to solve the brain teaser and win my adoration along with the highly coveted 10 school recognition stickers. 6 out of the 10 students instantly came to life. with their eyes widely awakening from the procrustean required class project lull, they enthusiastically leaped out of their desk-based shackles and swiftly threw their hands up into the air joyfully shouting, teacher me! teacher me! i have the ANSWER!
and indeed, they did
from there the remaining 3 students came to life with excitingly inquisitive tones in their discourse and we, as a united ESL class, proceeded to get into a session of 20 Questions that magically connected us all on a humanistic level that felt like a truly meaningful, educational experience for both my students and me...
it was, if anything, pedagogically rejuvenating to say the leastwell, its hard to put into wordsyou just had to be there |
