After I rejected my bosses advances, and his hateful mistreatment, I found a new job and asked for the letter of release. He said no, then he said he would, and today he said no again and asked me to pay nearly two-months salary for all the costs I have given him. Despite the fact that he has the full notice allowable by contract. I had to get in a near wrestling match with him to get my money. I had to make promises under duress and that I knew I would never keep, because he had a hold of my pay with a tight fist and white knuckles. If I would have said no to his promises of staying to teach, he would not have paid me. I am amazed I never said f-you! I am pulling a run folks. There is no other resolution. Despite what everyone says about Immigration allowing you out if you beg, it simply is not true. I am packing now.

I have been here 6-weeks. I will blast this school once I am out of the country so no other folks come to it. These people took money from my salary to pay utilities I already paid, and made me pay a "user fee," for the apartment and not listed in the contract.
I am packing now. I am getting off here to finish packing my bags so I can leave tomorrow. |

good for you!
it's too bad that korea has been a bust of an experience for you. be sure to post the name of the school, director's name, etc. when you're safely landed. |

If you have any mp3 player or camera to take with you it may aid in the jaggoff of a director in doing anything to you. When I went into the office the first time to discuss all of the ways I felt the director was breaking the contract, I pressed the record button on my mp3 player, then walked in. damned thing ran out of battery before anything really recorded... |

A third thread about this?
Did you give hime the 30 days? If you don't get the release letter you are pretty much screwed.
Will we see another thread about this? Keep in mind possible 'blacklisting' by this boss in stalling your future Korean endeavours.

I would rather be blacklisted than paid. Release letter? Who cares about a release letter when I have feared his becoming violent towards me. Who works for nothing? And who comes to Korea to work illegally at other schools, so that the director and his friends can dodge taxes? He too should expect to be blacklisted. I'd rather be in my country than fearing arrest and imprisonment so these men can profit from my labor. |

midwest,
are you coming back again to give it another go with another school? why couldn't you just have immigration get him to give you the letter of release?
at least you got all of your pay.

No, I did not get all of of my pay, I will leave with money being owed to me. Can you please tell me how immigration can make someone give you a letter of release? I talked with a free legal service and they said that immigration almost always rules in favor of the hogwan owners.
If someone knows how to get a release from immigration, I would be happy to hear about that.
I have another job with a large company, and I know I will not have my pay withheld or be harassed in the same way I was here. But no letter, no job, right? |

Not true. I know two people who came back into different provinces and immigration didn't even noticed they'd left unfinished contracts behind. |

midwest,
I meant, are you coming back to Korea to teach again? If so, I'm not sure how you can do that without your letter of release.
I've read here on Dave's where Immigration force hogwan owners to comply and, grudgingly, they produce a letter for the teacher.
So, are you coming back to Korea then? |

Coming back? I doubt it! The US Dept of State warns future teachers to Korea that teachers' in Korea report the worst and most cases of employer abuse and unpaid wages. The first time I came, my director was in so much debt she could not pay the teachers or the fuel bills. We sat with tight white knuckles each month waiting for our money that invariably came one to two weeks late. The second time, well, you know the rest of the stories! I thought it was impossible that such a situation would occur again.
I am packed, I will be leaving for the bus station at 10 am. I am still looking at airfare for Hanoi and Singapore. I'll decide where at the airport. I am as good as gone. |
