This is almost the level of taping a song you like from the radio but here it goes. If you don't want to buy a whole CD to get the one good song, say, My Aunt Mary has or Humming Urban Stereo has, and you can't find it on your favorite western music stealing service or as a torrent, then check out youtube. Odds are some teenage flilipina has uploaded the video.

Now if you find one with good sound quality, download the youtube stealer ap:

http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/

This lets you download the .flv (flash video) file to your computer. The app then lets you convert the flv file to various formats, mostly video (wmv, mov, etc). However it has a flv to mp3 conversion. Basically it just dupes down the audio.

There you go. Also a great way to get the audio out of some youtube videos you might just want to listen to on your mp3 player.

I would also suggest looking on a non-western music stealing service. Maybe one where Koreans are more likely to upload music, if you're looking for Korean music. Wink

All the same, nice of you to post about an alternative option.

Thanks for the tip, that's cool for any video I feel like saving off of youtube.

I was hoping you could answer a question about the next step- I have a viedo iPod, so I wanted to keep the files as is so I can have music videos on my iPod- how can I get iTunes to add the files to its library? Apparently I am incapable of doing these things now that iTunes is so stealthy about illegally downloaded stuff (it won't even play my old files I had on my old-school Mac's iTunes...)

Any ideas or knowledge would be much appreciated!

I'm not sure, actually. I don't have an iPod.

If you want to convert videos for iPod use, download a program called gom encoder. It's free until around June/July this year and will recode just about any type of video file into any other type of file, and IIRC, there is an option for iPods.

And, fyi, iTunes doesn't care if your media is legally downloaded or not, just whether it is in the proper format, which means either .mp4 or .h264 for videos (IIRC.)

And finally, if you are wondering, yes, I have an iPod, and yes, I have put many, many videos on mine.

Yeah, I'm really smart. Ended up that my computer was simply freezing up mid-conversion... that program has a specific option to convert the file for iTunes. Worked like a charm- cheers again.
