Can anyone give me an idea of how much a hanbok costs? I know, I know, it will depend on fabric, etc, but any details would be great. I've asked my Korean friends and just get told "Oh, it's very expensive."
"How much?"
"I don't know." |

You can buy a cheap one for about 100K; cheap material.
A quality one will cost you about 500K and would be the normal quality for weddings and functions.
I dare say shop prices vary dependant on the neighbourhood, and an online purchase or a good second-hand one may look identical and save a wee bit. |

Mine was about 500,000- but yea, it depends on where you buy it, quality, and design. If you get one at a wholesale market it will be less than at a boutique-y store near tourist traps. |

I paid 200K for mine basic materials off the wall, all silk. Included the overcoat, overskirt, under dress, pantaloons, matching purse and the little jewelry pieces- a stick pin for the bow and the dangling piece that hangs down from the chest (mine has a jade cut out symbol in it).
I bought it down in Icheon at one of the little shops. I did the fittings there in the store and it took about 2 weeks if I remember right. |

Are there special occasions where all women are expected to wear a hanbok, even if they aren't Korean? |

For my wedding hangbok I think we paid 1.3M won.
But then they used Gold for my buttons ....
My hangbok is pretty high class. |

Nyah I got one as a souvenir. When I was in Fukuoka I got a Yukata too. I originally had the idea if I ever went back to the states to teach in the public schools I could use them in some kind of social science/culture class. Now I just figure they are an interesting sovenir. I wore the hanbook for Halloween one year. Don't recommend doing that I was so worried about getting stuff on the silk, but I did get a lot of comments/questions on it. Now it sits in a garment bag in the closet at my mom's house. |
