Anyone follow the Keynote at Macworld Today?

Some big news, some not so big.

Big:

Time capsule: The best 802.11 N standard router with a built in 500gb or 1Tb hard drive for networked backups. Does automated backups using leopards time machine software, does backups of multiple computers simultaneously. I can tell you from a ton of experience wireless networking that the Apple routers are easily amongst the best around. Decent pricing too, a surprise for a new Apple product.

Apple TV take 2: You can rent/buy movies and tv shows directly from your tv, in full hd, 5.1 dolby digital, you can view audio and video podcasts, youtube direct to the tv, photos (stored, flickr or .mac are all sources), you can still sync with your computer but now its doesn't need a computer. I think they have improved it a lot, the new interface is also cool. They also lowered the prices for Apple Tv as well.

Macbook Air: Cool factor 10/10, the thing fits into an envelope, it has a ton of cool technology, its the slimmest and most beautiful ultra portable computer I have ever seen. Up's: Size, screen (led backlit), multi touch - touch pad (same gestures as the iPhone and touch), Battery life (5 hours using wifi), solid state hard drives (optional) and the keyboard (backlit, same great feedback as the macbook) Downs: No optical drives (optional-yes), lack of ports (They claim the wireless features can solve this, I'm not sure how besides bluetooth), Price $1799.99 or $3000.00 usd.

Small:

iPhone/iTouch updates: most of the stuff is boring but the google maps now is like a GPS as it maps your current location automatically. However using a jailbreak you can get better stuff for free. The iPhone updates are free, but for 5 apps for the iPod its $22 bucks. Come on Steve, thats a rip job considering the price of the touch and the availability of a free jailbreak. Charging people for maps and a bunch of minor apps (notes, weather ect..) is like asking them to jailbreak.

iTunes movie rentals: Most people think this is boring news. I think it is part of the beginning of the death of movie rental outlets. These can be streamed to an apple tv and probably other technologies.

Overall I think the macworld expo will be a success, but it was much smaller than last years (iPhone). The keynote was good, boring until the Macbook Air was introduced. I dont think any of these announcements will be as revolutionary as last year but they should help drive that Apple stock up over $200 a share by years end.

Thoughts?

The iPod Touch $20 app upgrade is brutal. Whats up with that?!?! I jailbroke my iPod and have them for free....definitely not upgrading, not yet anyways. It's not worth it.

Wooo, the Macbook Air has lots of cool thingamajiggies. The trackpad size, and gestures feature are great.
The price is quite obscene though.

Yeah the track pad gestures will certainly be coming in all future mac portables. The wireless migrations, and remote disk is also pretty cool, I can see that being a big thing in the near future.

The Intel ceo explaining why and how they made a core 2 duo 60% smaller after Apple challenged them, to me, is a sign that Apple is gaining some clout outside of the music world, they are actually making headway into the mainstream hardware world as an innovator.

Incorrect. The Apple TV only does 720p, reliably this time.

If only I'd waited two years...I could have gotten the new Mac. Smile
