Quote:
LONDON - Virgin Atlantic said Monday it would fly one of its Boeing 747 planes on biofuel during a demonstration flight from London to Amsterdam next month.

Virgin Atlantic Chairman Richard Branson said the test flight, which he called the first of its kind, would yield crucial information on how to reduce aviation's carbon footprint.

Branson launched an alternative fuels division at Virgin in 2006, pledging the profits from his airline and trains for 10 years.

My favorite blogger put this in perspective:

Now we're not only starving the people to feed the cars, we are also starving the people to feed the planes, ships and trains as well.

If cattle were grass fed instead of grain feed it would save most of the grain that goes to bio fuel.

Yeah but if we just fed them grass they wouldn't grow as fast and large. I am sure you have been to some other Asian countries where the cattle are worked as well and all look like they have on hoof in the grave. Biofuel is a stupid idea.

the uni back home has a biofuel center. i checked it out. according to them, the corn can be used twice: the liquid is squeezed out for fuel and the remaining meal can be used as animal feed.

After you sqeeze out all the sugars what is left of nutritional value to the animal? The roughage?

Co2 emissions from air travel are 2%

It's set to be surpassed by the IT industry in the not that distant future and is about the same as the carbon footprint created by the makers of handmade clay bricks.

The demonization of air travel and also the admiration of biofuels are utter, utter rubbish.

Anyone wanna buy a slightly used perpetual motion machine? First ten buyers will get some free carbon credits as well.

Biofuel is a joke. Now that we're past Iowa I hope never to hear about it again, although I'm sure we will. More Red States, looking for more taxes than they put in.

What most of us are going to find in the near future is that a lot of the things that we've been told over the last 40 years or so are "a complete joke".

Is this forum being divided into two camps? And, unfortunately, I'm not referring to the biofuel issue.
