Does anyone have any recommendations on critical-thinking books or books that have a lot of controversial topics that you can use for arguments/debates?

For thinking I recommend a Nintendo DS and Brain Age. When I'm diligent and do my three activities every morning I feel smarter at least.

There's lots available on the web. Problems that cloud critical thinking:

1) logical fallacies

This is a good over view of the top fallacies people make.

2) Bias

Humans are frequently poor objective judges. We evolved to have to make quick choices based on limited information and err on the side of false positives. It's better to look foolish thinking a shadow is a tiger than thinking a tiger is really just a shadow and trying to keep your pride. Wiki has a great list of cognitive biases:

3) Weasel Words

Lots of claims we have to evaluate in life are commercial. Learning how such claims are soft shoed via weasel words is a great way of judging claims:

Mostly critical thinking, I find, is stripping away the fallacies, biases, and weasel words. What remains should be either logic or nothing.

Check out the links, abuse your work printer, read it on your subway rides.

For here in Korea with high level students 'Culturally Speaking" rocks.

Plenty of opportunity for having a laugh with those capable of joking around in english. (I was fortunate and the class was very high level).
