Hi all, I just would like some help in determining whether or not this is a good job offer to take...here are the details:


The name of the school: Oedae
Type of Students : Kindergarten /Elementary/Middle school student
Working hours a day : 6 hours
Working days a week : Mon - Friday
Payment :2.1million won
Operating hours : 10:00 a.m~ 6:00 p.m or 11:00a.m~7:30p.m (included lunch break, class preparation, break times etc..)
Overtime payment : 15000 won per 40mins
Class size: 10 students
Starting date:end of March , 2008
Type of Housing : Single accommodation(fully-furnished), 5mins on foot
Severance (equal to 1month's salary)
Vacation: Paid 10 days+ National holidays+ Sat+Sun
Health Insurance: 50%
Air fare : Provided
Current No of Foreign teachers:3
Current No of Korean teachers:3

Far too low pay for such high hours. You could do nearly 20-40% more pay for 66% of the hours at a public school with more than 2 months vacation.

I would stronly advise against this position unless you were about to go broke tommorow & needed the money to keep yourself from starving.

There are three rules when looking at hagwon jobs:

1) Talk to current teachers
2) Talk to current teachers
3) Talk to current teachers

Ask the director for emails and phone numbers. If you can't get them, look elsewhere!

By the way, talking to the teacher you are replacing is not a good idea. That teacher may want you to come so they can get out of their contract.

If you are not satisfied, then take Chicken's advice and apply for a public school job. Public school jobs have a higher average satisfaction rate than hagwons.

Also, why do you want to teach kids? Do you NOT want to be in a large city?

thanks for the responses...the overall consensus appears negative and I should probably settle for something else...I knew this would be kinda shady but I needed some confirmation. I am a newbie with just a B.A and minimal teaching exp. but I have a sixth sense about when I about to get to screwed...Also, I would like to be in a large city but I hate pollution and love parks and soccer fields...Play alot of soccer...Changwon city seems like a good fit...decent size city...possibly less pollution than other large/larger cities in South Korea...and it has alot of parks from what I see on their website...also, it has 3 pro-soccer teams in the area, and I am hoping that I can at least train with one team or play some competitive soccer once I get to south korea...

any suggestions on cities with soccer fields, parks, a good soccer fan base and most importantly with moderate (not severe like in Seoul) to little or no pollution?...and for a newbie in my position, what is acceptable and unacceptable to accept as a contract offer?...I have looked over many posts and there seems to be some different opinions on this...and I hope i can get some vets to clear this up for me...
