| That's the online rate. Actually, it's at 33 now but online it's shown at 29. If you want real rate quotes try the BKK Bank site. |

definitely a no brainer that thailand has "been" the place to be. however, with the USD exchanging at sub 30 baht lately, my idea of paradise just might start changing. and for those of you out there with the "there's more to thailand than just its affordability" attitude, you've obviously never experienced thailand WITH money in your pocket. sure, thailand is magical in many ways but being able to experience that magic is due largely in part to how cheap thailand has been in the past. let the flaming begin.

I wouldn't flame you for that.
Thailand has gotten old and the Thais are not as friendly as the "Land of Smiles" propoganda would have you beleive.
I think the Filipinos are much more friendlier than that Thais and their beaches are nicer! But the food..... |

I fully agree that Filipinos are friendlier than Thais. Thais might be mild mannered and polite, but that doesn't mean they're friendlier.
I went to Phuket in September with my girlfriend. It rained but man, it was bad as Pattaya in many ways, AND beer was like $2.70 a bottle, hardly cheap. Two months later, we hit Boracay and we loved that place a MILLION TIMES MORE than Phuket. I have no plan to visit Thailand in the near future, as better destinations await in the Philippines. |

The people are amazing, and the weather, food, and prices are great.
BUT
I've always been bummed out by just how transparent the socio-economic stuff is down there. The lengths you have to go to avoid seeing Dick Chaney lookalikes with multiple teenage "girlfriends"...yikes.
It really makes me thankful that Korea has a relatively healthy economy these days (and gives me some insight to at least one possibly good effect of Korea's intense nationalism and one-family attitude). |

Bangkok is not so cheap, and even less so if you`re white and can`t speak Thai well. The main exception is rent (you can get a pretty decent serviced apartment for pretty cheap - though there are lots of very expensive ones too), most other stuff is the same price as anywhere else. Generally you get what you pay for, there`s a lot of cheap knock off kind of stuff, but it is usually not worth buying.
Drinking is also a bit cheaper, but if you go out partying every night you`ll probably find yourself broke in a hurry (it`s not possible on an English teaching salary) |

Yeah, Bangkok would suck.
You know, there are teachers there who are trapped. They don't have enough money to purchase an international flight out of the country.
Some of them are trying to get TEFL jobs in Korea because Korean schools might pay for their airfare outta there. |

| I lived up North. Chiang Mai is amongst the cheapest places in Thailand, with the most laid back people and friendly attitudes. No beaches though. |

About 25-30k Baht/month (around $800-1000). Often these people don`t have degrees though, they just do the visa runs and live paycheck to paycheck. If you have a degree you might make above that, but not much more (any savings will still be negligible). Unless you can teach at a qualified international school, then it`s possible to make up to $2000 (or even $3000+ at the top tier ones).
But yeah, it mostly sucks. |

My friend was making the equivalent of 5 million won a month at an international school in Ban chang, which is about 40 minutes drive from pattaya. Being a young, single guy, he said it was the best 2 years of his life in "certain regards". He left that job for one paying 7.5 mill a month in china. God damn, why oh why did i flake my way through university with a sociology degree....wahhhh!!!!!!! |

| Ya gotta admit, Thailand is fun for a single guy but you'll probably spend your life hedonistically. High-paying jobs in the Land of "Smiles" probably don't last too long, either. |

Awesome place to vacation. wouldn't want to teach tere for the following reasons.
Low Salary.
Too hot all year round and they like you to wear shirt and tie.
Apparently as poorly or more badly organised than Koreans when it comes to the goings on in the workplace. |

5 million!???.... ummmm... your friend was not making 5 million a month. Even the top International school in Thailand doesn't pay that much. |

uuummmm....yeah, he was, he has no reason to lie. He was the head of the music department at an international school in ban chang. Top international schools pay good money for good teachers and he has the goods. There is a ton of great paying jobs out there on the international school circuit, puts our meagre offerings to shame. |
