This is an example of how to win with your public school when they can't
seem to see things in the EPIK contract the same way as you.

I request to take home leave from Jan 19 - Feb 10 because no classes
are scheduled during those weeks. Speaking to my co-teacher she liked
that idea. Someone at the POE told her the ART 10 in the contract said
home leave was to be taken during the last 2 weeks of Feb.

(I also mentioned to my CT that should this intransigence continue
the "Home Leave" would occur upon the completion of my contract and I
would persue opportunities elsewhere, I did not include this information
in the letter.)

So I wrote a letter, "Paid Leave" request are supposed to be in writing
after all (ART 14).

Well Article 14 states that Paid Leave scheduling can be negotiated
to "smooth work operations".

This is what I wrote, use it if you like.

To whom it may concern:

This is a special request for a change to my home leave schedule, that I
think will benefit for the school and also help me accomplish my goals.

This is a Justification for my extended Home Leave. I am requesting to
combine my remaining 7 days vacation with my Home Leave time. I
would like to take this time starting January 19th and ending February
10th.

I need to combine this time and use it during those dates so I can attend
to personal business back home. During his time period there are no
classes scheduled at (School Name) School. I have completed winter
camp. Also during this time frame there are 3 scheduled holidays for the
Lunar New Year.

I realize this does not comply strictly with Article 10 (Renewal) of the
contract however I believe that Article 14 (Paid Leave) allows for the
School Principle and I to negotiate changes to the vacation and home
leave policy in order to provide for the smooth operation of school
business.

I am sure you can understand that Home Leave would be considered a
form of Paid Leave making Article 10 a subordinate article to Article 14.

I am sure you will agree that these changes will not interfere with the
operation of school and will in fact optimize my availability for class
scheduling.

I look forward to continuing my contract for another school year.

Best Regards,

Jubal Harshaw
