An MBA is essentially 60k for easy access to interviews and a large rolodex. Now, some people will earn 100k/year first year out, but those people were already earning high before the MBA and are not career switching. Also, if memory serves only 7 schools have average salaries in excess of 100k, and the spread is huge (returning management consultants and Ibankers earn 400k and HR generalists 60k) If you were doing esl prior to the MBA do not expect to be working as an investment banker when you finish. Work experience will be crucial in determining what kind of job you get. Of course, there will be exceptions, but not outside of the top 10, or schools known for a specialty.
I decided against an MBA for the above reasons and instead focused more narrowly in my grad education. I managed to escape the "esl trap". If you want to do finance (and have an ESL background), study finance/economics, if you dig marketing/HR then do a specialized masters in that. From esl, and MBA won't be much assistance in guiding you to the path of riches. It is too general, and the good jobs already spoken for. |

| My mom knows a couple of friends who took an MBA course, one is for finance n the other for business. The one in finance took him 8 yrs to complete the course cuz he was working n studying at the same time. Also, they both have a lot of work experience related to the field before they took their MBA. It's a very busy career. |

Doesn't it cost that much everywhere? When I took it in NYC a couple years back, I think I paid the same amount (don't quote me). $250 for 3.5 hours of fun |

Yes. Someone said it cost $150, I just took it and know otherwise. |

On that note, is there anyone out there who plans on taking it anytime soon and wants to study? I did ok my first time but want to re-test just to hopefully open a few more doors. |

If you get 700 or higher, do not take the test again. Even mid to high 600s may be good enough to get into a top tier school. Remember, GMAT is only one data point that bschool admissions look at. |

I have already heard from my number two and three pick schools and was accepted to both. My number one pick contacted me and said that a higher GMAT would strenghten my application and make up for the fact that my work experience is non-relative. Most of their applicants have 3 years in the field and are already licensed brokers/agents. |

Wow, congrats man. 2 outta 3 ain't bad, especially considering the bschool "crapshoot" application process!! Thats pretty cool that the school contacted you to give feedback on your candidacy. Only one of the schools I applied to offered that, and you had to signup for it (which was on a first come first serve basis).
Hit those GMAT books hard and get that high score man - you can do it. |

Thanks, I appreciate it. I find the Princeton Review series to be pretty comprehensive and well written. I figure I have a lot of free time on my hands, might as well use it constructively. If I don't score higher, I'm still in at my number two.
Were you an ESL teacher when you applied? How did your work history affect your application? I worked at a well-known mortgage company my first year out of undergrad before coming to Korea and started a business here a while ago. I tried to play both of those cards to my best advantage. BSchools know what "teaching" in Korea is and from what I�ve read it is not conducive to the applicant. |
