I know that these are covered in the FAQ, but the posts are kind of old, so I'm wondering if anything has changed. I was wondering where the best place to get a phone in Seoul would be. I'm under the impression that rent-a phones are the way to go. Also, are there good cable/internet places? I'm working for SMOE but I'm not sure if they do this or not. I'm assuming they don't. |

Nothing much has changed.
Your apartment should already have basic cable hooked up when you move in. If it is not, then a simple call will hook it up. Cost for basic cable (70-odd channels) is about 5000 won per month. Hook up wait times can vary from 2-48 hours.
Getting your internet hooked up is just a phone call away and is usually done within 24 hours of your call. IF you meant cyber cafes, there are tons around. Rates run from about 1000 won per hour. You should also have a computer with internet at your school (probably on your desk).
Cell phones are the way to go. Rent-a-phones are not. There is a cell phone store on every block in the city so no worry. IT takes about 30 minutes to get you going with a pay-as-you-go / prepaid cell service. |

Internet here is all broadband and price varries with bandwidth.
If you are a casual surfer, get the combo cable/internet package from your local provider for about 15-20k won. If you are a mega downloader then get a VDSL or faster connection from any of the big guys (KT, Hanaro, etc). They run about 30-40k per month. Again, the best choice will be specific on the neighborhood you end up in.
The 3 cell phone companies are all the same as far as service and quality in the greater Seoul area when it comes to their prepaid service. |

well unless things HAVE changed AGAIN very very recently, it's my experience one has to pay a year in advance for cable - plus some other kind of crappy fee -
I'd really like to hear any companies that will do otherwise - in Seoul - ? |

Never really been interested in TV since it's so easy to DL shows on the internet. I currently use Hana TV which is like Video on Demand unless you can't read Korean in which case it is Waste-Of-Money-On-Demand. I think you might be talking about Skylife (sateillite TV).. cable companies tend to differ a lot.
Anyway HanaTV only costs like 3 or 4 $s a month on top of my fast internet package and I can read Korean so I can understand which movies and shows are on offer so I'm happy enough.
OP: Internet is fast her BTW, I can d/l a movie in less than 5 minutes if that is a helpful indicator of speed. |

I'd avoid rentaphones, if possible. You can get a decent contract phone from LG telecom, with a 30,000W sign up fee. You'll need your ARC, and bank info (they set it up to automatically deduct each month), and you might need to go to a couple of different shops before you find someone with enough English ability to set you up. |

no, this was early in 2007; I checked (and others did also) trying to find the best cable package for several of us who lived in the same nabe, we were told ALL cable companies are now requiring the 1 year pay-in-advance and deposit allegedly due to foreigners not paying their bills.
I even tried to transfer service from a prior company I had used before and paid all my bills - they said they would be happy to transfer the service but still I had to pay a year in advance !
if you currently have service, that's not going to change, but for new customers, this is what's required.
I'd really like to hear if that's been changed or not - that's a big chunk of change to put down - some of them were like 500,000 won or something -for CABLE!
as for SAT - same thing - they want you to put down a huge amount - maybe over 1 mill won - I had SAT when I first came to K - no problem, they came and installed the dish and I only paid a monthly payment, maybe 25,000 won or something |
