So after about a billion phone calls, emails and meetings with the Korean and Canadian Embassies, the Ministry of Justice in Korea, and immigration, I have found a resolution for Canadians working in Korea currently to get a criminal record check without going home.

The Canadian Embassy has confirmed that they will notarize a criminal check for us (for a fee of 40,000 won) It doesn't need to be the Vulnerable Sector Search that the Korean Embassies in Canada are requesting. The Ministry of Justice and Immigration have NO IDEA what this specific check is, and don't realize that it is impossible for Canadians to get without it taking 6 months or going back to Canada.

So, you will have to authorize someone in Canada to get a Criminal record check done on your behalf, send them 2 photocopied pieces of ID, and then have it sent to you here. Then take it to the Canadian Embassy to have it Notarized.

The bottom line is that it was the Korean Embassy in Canada that implemented this idea. They are completely clueless, as they said to me that in order to extend a visa, I had to go back to Canada every year. (I have extended 6 times in Korea. But still I must be wrong according to the embassy) So, avoid the Korean Embassy in this process. Those in Canada will have to get the Vulnerable Sector Search, and it could prove difficult depending on where you live, but there are ways to get it done.
