i think it is a shame that a lot of people stay in korea indefinitely because they couldn't make it back home. i'm not trying to play "holier than thou" or take the piss out of anyone, but there are far too many people in korea for the wrong reasons. the whole 2 years that i was there i was haunted with the question: "am i here because i cannot succeed at home or fit in?" now i'm back at home and i'll be honest it's not easy, but i feel like i can make it if i keep trying. i don't see any reasons why i can't succeed here with a career and get dates if i'm in the mood (and believe me, i'm not brad pitt). life is easy in korea for the most part and i can understand why some people stay, but we shouldn't look at life in our native countries as something we can never enjoy. travel is great and i recommend it. i think it's impossible to really appreciate your own country without experiencing life in another -- just be sure you're staying in korea for positive reasons.

Kangnam, you have a good point. Thing is, Korea can be like a bad habit or drug that one cannot get off of. It's relatively easy to find a job in Korea making a salary that you can live on AND save money, not to mention enjoy yourself in the process. There are peeps who leave Korea swearing never to return and voila, within 3-6 months, they are back and raving about how great Korea is and how boring and dull home is.

That said, I do believe dating in Asia is better than in the West in that you have more chances to date here and less fear of the other unpleasant aspects of Western dating (the rape charge filed by some vengeful ex and the weight factor, for example).

i see your point and i don't have a problem with long termers/ lifers as long as they are doing it for the right reasons. i just have a problem with people who go into permanent exile in korea with the "whoa, i can actually get laid here, dude!" attitude, or "this job is so easy and don't really have to work ... haha, those naive korean people!" don't get me wrong, i partied like hell in korea, had a good time and dated prolifically, but ultimately i yearned for a more meaningful existence than going to hongdae every weekend, getting drunk and picking up ho's.

Living in korea has been a trip. I learnt the language and immersed myself on activities that would've been too expensive to do back home (in Oz); like studying martial arts and learning an instrument.

Shawner it must be terrible "to beg for dates" and living a 'humdrum'
lifestyle but then again life is what you make of it.

I came here to actually escape from a hectic teaching carreer back home. Laughing Aside from the big classes I teach in a school...everything is a bonus; less tax; free housing; no admin work...However, living here is escaping "reality" for me. So for those whose main reason is to stay here because you're scared that you can't make anything of yourself back home then stay. Those who loves this country for all that it has to offer good or bad then this is where you belong. Home is where the heart is.

Shocked Surprised That's so bizarre. It's bizarreness on the same level I've experienced from Koreans.

exactly..

it's sad to hear stories such as shawner88's. he simply left his native land cos he couldn't get dates...and expects his whiteness to attract girls in a far and distant land.

A lot of westerners are arrogant, obnoxious, self- absorbed, selfish pains in the rear. Thats why i'm not going back (To england or Australia). That, and the fact my actual home country is a third world toilet rapidly becoming a dustbowl.

EXACTLY! I've seen it multiple times. Actually almost I knew a good group of friends living in Busan a long time ago.. it seemed like all of them complained daily and couldn't wait to finish the contract or get out.. or to try Thailand or Japan or some other 'dream'.. or just get back home.

Well over half of those people did do those things.. some went home and went for masters.. they did random other things.. and ultimately a fairly large number of them ended up coming back here as well.. myself included..

I even see it on this board.. guys like 'Real Reality' who pretty much had all negative things to say about Korea.. and all of a sudden he's back trying to get a university job and whatever else after his stint home or whatever.. not just him.. but quite a few others as well.

Sakamuras, shut your stupid cakehole.

You are the worst kind of troll. You wait for a few foreigners to start trashing another foreigner, then you jump on the bandwagon, kicking him while he is down. Needless to say, you conveniently 'forgot' to tell the foreigners you are agreeing with, that you hate them and have no respect for them whatsoever.

If you hate us all so much, leave this board and don't come back. You are neither welcome nor wanted.

Shawner88 is at least being honest.

There are no "noble" reasons for doing anything as far as I'm concerned.
