Maybe not the most pleasant topic, but several come to mind

1 Yongpoon department store (happened after I got here, but i saw the national geographic version of it)
2 Subway fiasco in Taegu (Korean guy throwing a carton of fuel into a carriage)
3 Disco in Taegu that caught fire, where many young people died because guys on the gate wouldn't let the young highschool kids out until they had payed some W2000 each.
4 the childrens camp that caught fire, because the staff didn't check an inscense burner. Burner set the place alight and some 40 preschool kids were killed

any others?

Yeosu Detention Center fire...I think early 2007/late 2006. 8 foreigners died, 18 others injured. I'm pretty sure the fire was started by a detainee, but the guards couldn't find the keys to unlock the cells....a freaking travesty.

yes, not my finest comment, I have just had a bad couple of days with Korean men and then someone on here has said they were raped and that nothing can be done as the cops let it go as "drunken behaviour".....I am way overdue at Incheon airport.

Numerous stories since 2001 of brothels and hogwons burning down with lots of people trapped inside of them due to owners locking them inside to prevent the victims from leaving.

The warehouse that burned down recently killed 40 people - including at least 13 foreigners - and it had but one locked Exit Door and no fire escape.

1/ The Uiryeong massacre in Gyeongsangnamdo, in April 1982. 58 people died.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woo_Bum-kon

2/ Gwangju Democratization Movement (May 18-> May 27, 1980)

"There is no exact death toll of the 1980 Gwangju Uprising. According to the May 18 Bereaved Family Association, at least 165 people died between May 18 and 27. Another 65 are still missing and presumed dead."

I went & saw the memorial in August last year. Quite moving.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwangju_Massacre

Although neither of the above were disasters per se, they were both tragic events in Korea's history.

Some estimates put the number of murdered Gwanjuians at over 2,000!

I believe it was Sampoong. 501 killed. Wikipedia has a good article on it.

Seongsu Bridge collapse, 1994. 32 killed, 19 injured. One of my Korean co-workers lost some of his classmates in the collapse. He also lost one of his best friends in the recent warehouse fire in Ichon.

Should probably mention the people who get electrocuted every year during rainy season by walking through puddles which conduct electricity from faulty underground wiring. Be careful where you step, folks.

On a related note, I recently saw a story that estimated over 100,000 laborers were killed in China due to industrial accidents in 2007 alone...

No . The guy can hardly contain his racism . 99% of people in Korea I meet report nothing of the type of experience that this guy always moans about . Perhaps that's good reason to consider that the fault lies with him rather than the Koreans . Just leave buddy .
