Yesterday, Jan. 19, was Edgar Allen Poe's 199th. Happy birthday!!

Can anyone think of a one page story that can give you the creeps like 'The Tell-tale Heart'?

I thought the following story was cool.

Mystery man's annual visit to Poe grave

It isn't one page, but "The Pit & The Pendulum" still is one of the most visual/vivid short stories I've ever read. It's the perfect short story.

Happy B-Day Eddie...

I am a huge fan of the American gothic, although sometimes I think I prefer the Brtish Gothicism of Anne Radcliffe, Monk Lewis, et al. When I was an undergrad, I helped proof a prof's book on the tales of terror so prevalent in Blackwood's Magazine in the 19th century, kind of reinforcing the aforementioned preference.

However, what Poe did for the American horror story/ detective fiction is immeasurable. The Masque of the Red Death and The Raven are among some of the darkest poetry written in the 19th century, ranking up there with Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market and some of the English translations of ETA Hoffman's stories.

Happy Birthday, and many happy returns. Unheimlich!

WHen I was reading Alternadad by Neil Pollack, I was hoping he'd go with his better instincts and name his son
Edgar Allan Pollack.

Too bad.

(the system of) doctor tarr and professor fether - alan parsons project Cool

just what you need to make you feel better
just what you need to make you feel
just what you need to make you feel better
just what you need to make you feel

at the far end of your tether
and your thoughts won't fit together
so you sleep light or whatever
and the night goes on forever
and your mind changes like the weather
your in need of doctor tarr and professor fether

even clouds seem bright and breezy
'cause the livin' is free and easy
see the rat race in a new way
like you're walkin' up to a new day
it's a wise thing if you're clever
take a lead from doctor tarr and professor fether

find the end of the rainbow
fly wherever the winds blow
laugh at life like a sideshow
just what you need to make you feel better

satisfaction altogether
guaranteed by doctor tarr and professor fether

find the end of the rainbow
fly wherever the winds blow
laugh at life like a sideshow
just what you need to make you feel better

don't stop bringin' the girls round
don't start havin' a showdown
keep on handin' the jug round
all that you need is wine and good company

so cool Cool

Good choice.

I love his poems, I am not usually one to read poetry but there is something about his work that grabs me, maybe it is because they are so powerfully sad.

Poe was also responsible for the first novel of dectective fiction. Overal he is one of my favourite authors of all time.

Even more impressive is that he named an NFL team.
