Sans Motorcycle Registration...Risky?

What are the risks of buying a motorcycle without the papers/title necessary to have it swapped into your name?

I'm very confident that the bike isn't stolen, so that's not an issue. The bike is technically registered (I believe to a foreigner who has left Korea), and has a license plate.

Can I still get insurance without a problem? What if I get pulled over/get in an accident? Any potential issues?

Thanks!

Would you do it back home?

I doubt it. I've never owned a bike before, but I certainly wouldn't do it back home with a car.

There are quite a few things I would do here though, that I wouldn't do back home...because the laws are different.

Anyone?

My bike was stolen in Anyang. It was a green 1997 Daelim 125 cc. Haha let me know if that's the bike your purchasing, lol.

I have a valid American driver's license...

Can I drive a 125CC bike with that? Or do I have to get a new license? What about insurance?

Does a 125CC bike look like a scooter or a motorcycle?

And I can't take a motorcycle on the highway, correct? Do I need a helmet?

1. Read the 25+ page motorcycle/scooter thread in this forum.

2. You really need to learn about the law and motorcycles before you get into trouble or kill yourself on the Korean streets.

3. To drive a 125cc bike or less (which can be a scooter or motorcycle) you need a valid home license AND a valid international drivers license. If you don't have that, you can "trade" your home license for a Korean license.

4. You legally need to register the bike in your name and you have to get insurance to do that. If you don't, expect to have fines ranging from hundreds to thousands of USD if you get stopped or have a wreck.

5. You can take a bike anywhere except "expressway" highways. Sidewalks are illegal, too, but you have a slim chance of getting caught.

6. Helmets are one of the few things enforced here (in Seoul at least).

Bibbity,
Thanks for the info.

Tom,
No...I was actually looking at a bike from a fellow Dave's poster that lives near me. I just sent him a note retracting my interest though, because I can't justify buying a bike that I can't register in my name.
