I see the former Otis has been busy today. I guess this is where he's in his element.

When I first saw Dave's picture, there was a slight blip on the gaydar. With the new picture, I can't turn the damn thing off.

Keeps me up at night...sheesh

OP, is this your first bulletin board experience? Flame-wars, trolling, it's all ok. It's part of a thriving on line community. Do you advocate government censorship of music, tv, movies and video games?

Get a life.

I don't think that flame-wars and trolling are all okay. IRL, they are regulated by social conventions (i.e. it takes balls to say some things to someone's face, because you *know* you're being an a-hole when you do it and so does everyone around you).

And no, I don't advocate government censorship, but I'm also not talking about the government. I'm talking about a community that I am a part of, and that I'd like to see improve.

I don't spend much time here anymore. Virtually every thread I've been interested in over the last few weeks has been quickly deleted.

Moderators work hard to keep this site free of porn, profanity and racism, but they can't filter snarkiness and idiocy, which, unfortunately, abounds.

I've been doing most of my posting on another expat site. At first, the freedom was both exhilarating (I get to say swears and talk about sex! Wheee!) and horrifying (some posters run with scissors and don't play welll with others.) I was confused about the role of the moderators, and at first I expected them to protect me from evil and disgusting attacks from other posters (yeah, there were a couple.) However, I realized that as a part of a small community, I had a choice and responsibility to stand up and say "That statement is sexist/racist/cruel," and that actually facing those issues felt better than waiting for mods to clip them out and sweep them under the rug.

Having developed a thick skin and the willingness to confront, I'm enjoying a livelier, more compelling dialogue with my fellow expats. Also, the smaller scale of the site allows for so many more options, like live chat, online games, customized profiles, reputation, gifts, gambling, etc. There are a few scary characters, some rabble rousers, but a great many warm, interesting, intelligent people, and of course the requisite handful of village idiots that are fun to kick around.

Right now, Dave's is too vast, too homogenized, too limited for me. It helped me a lot as a newbie, but it's just not what I want right now.

Are you one?

I am indeed a freak magnet, but only for this site. The other sites I go to have much more well adjusted people.

Like the Seoul police site for example... Very Happy

These guys really should hurry up with their plan of drinking themselves to death.

Personally, I'd wipe both boards out and set up some new ones (with better coding) along the lines of the Something Awful forums, where you have to pay to get an account.

It apparently works very well as a way to discourage village idiot types. I really suggest Sperling do it.

2 things though with the paying idea.

if people paid, they'd feel more entitled to have a say in how the boards were run and moderated.

And number 2 how many people would be willing to pay to moan and whine on a messageboard when they could (a) either find another one for free or (b) start up their own?

I'm not sure about the SA forums, but all reports I hear suggests that the users are happy with the mod's jobs there because they're usually quite fast about taking care of stupidity.

Then again, I think their mods are paid (A pittiance) as well, but I could be wrong about that.

The SA forums seem to have a fairly large membership and lots of discussion.

Yeah, it's all geek oriented, but maybe the Cafe could benefit in much the same way as they did.

I use the report button here and there, and to date I have never seen a post removed because of it. I checked over the posting guideline recently and i believe that my complaints were always for things directly covered by the post rules and still the offensive remains.

Honestly, I think Dave should retire new posting altogether here. Is there any issue to do with living in Korea that has not been addressed at some point or 'nother in the now five years this board has been open?

Think about that. Five years. There is nothing left to say. Dave's has gone into meta-reality.

Finis.

We have our benchmarks of what's unacceptable (porn, un-worksafe pics, blatant trolling by bored/drunk individuals) but with the rest of "heated discussions" we try to strike a balance; however since everybody's "it's-over-the-line" is in a different place, we can't possibly make everyone happy 100% of the time.
"Too much moderating!!"
"Too little moderating!!"

Hitting the post report button helps us find a better average. (Suggestion #1)

I'm also going to say the obvious: it's unfortunate that adults even need moderating.

How about everyone practicing a little self-sensorship--thinking twice before you hit the "submit" button in a froth of anger or whatever it is driving the escalating insults.(Suggestion #2)

Mom,

Can you ask Dad if we can have our sigs back now? We promise to be good. Scouts' honor.

Thanks,
