It is around 2-2 1/2 hours by bus but due to Pusan traffic it could take up to 3 1/2 hours to get to the terminal.

Suncheon has a pretty decent sized crowd that's pretty friendly. Here is a yahoo group for foreigners in Suncheon:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Sunchon_crowd/

Lived there my first year in Korea and it's a nice area to be in and I go back occassionally to visit friends still working/living there.

Suncheon is pretty good. I lived there for 6 years. Best food in Korea IMHO.

decent location to hit the big city of Gwangju in an hour or coastal Yeosu in less time than that, Jiri national park likewise close

Busan is two and a half hours away, Seoul four hours and twenty minutes by comfty cheap express bus

and it's on the train route: you can take a train to Mokpo or Haeundae beach in Busan, cheap as most transportation is here but slower than express buses by quite a bit

suncheon is renowned for its friendly foreigners: a bunch of them make a habit of spending friday nights at a bar in nearby coastal city of Gwangju at the foreigner bar called Goldfinger near city hall. i've done that a few times, from here in nearby rural gyeongsangnamdo
