Alright I've done a bit of reading up on here and I'm really just wondering about the whole bank employee writing in our passports when we send money home...this doesn't actually happen does it? Do they not realize they are not legally allowed to do such a thing? Yes that last question is easily answerable based on Korean mentality towards these types of things...but I'm really just wondering what the work around is so they don't touch my passport but still let me send my money home...I'm with KBStar btw...

Don't even take your passport with you. Take a photocopy of it if you want to and your ARC. You DO NOT need a passport to send money out of the country, an ARC is fine.

Yes, please do be careful about that. It infuriates me when they try to do that and then act like I'm the ignorant, careless, difficult party.

I suppose you could do what I do...never let it actually leave your grasp. I take it with me, but I also take a quick photocopy (in fact, I have one laminated specifically for such purposes) that they can manipulate and photocopy themselves all they want.

Hell, they can fold it, get coffee stains on it, bleed on it, hock a loogie on it, drop it on the floor, feed it to a small animal, whatever...pretty much treat it like immigration does my diploma. But they will not, ever, have more than a glance of my actual passport, as I hold it up for them to gawk and squint at.

I asked about this when I got my new passport in November (Canadian). The nice Embassy lady got on the phone, and returned to tell me: "It's the Korean banks' policy." In other words - it's ok with them.

My bank has made a few small notations in my passport.
I dont care.

I checked with the Dept of Internal Affairs in NZ about this issue because KB tried to stamp my passport and I wasn't happy about it. I got the following email back from the DIA and got a friend to translate it in Korean so I can show my bank next time they try to stamp/write in my passport.

Thank you for your email received 7 January 2008 regarding your bank in Korea stamping money transfer details in your New Zealand Passport.

A New Zealand Passport is a travel document issued by the New Zealand Government for the purpose of facilitating international travel for New Zealand Citizens. The pages within the passport are to record entry and exit details of border controls and for the placement of visas.

While the stamping of banking details in the back of your passport may not necessarily invalidate your passport, this may cause you unnecessary problems at border controls. I suggest that you ask your bank to cease this practice in order to avoid encountering any problems travelling on your passport.

Yeah, I've already had this happen to me twice. Why DO they do it? And Will it indeed cause me trouble at immigration? What's the purpose? Would like to hear from anyone who has had their passports stamped and experienced problems at immi.
The last time I was at the bank they also had me sign an extra sheet that says I'm sending money home that I earned. I've not had to sign one before. That left me scratching my head.
