|
|
Hello, sorry in advance if this post has already been covered. It probably has been. I ran a search, and after a couple of pages of hunting, couldn't find anything that looked helpful.
My question is this:
My friend was just caught teaching English illegally at a kindergarten. He was on a tourist visa, and didn't have a degree. I know something bad will happen to him. Will he be deported? Fined? Will he spend time in jail?
If all you're just going to write something general like "he'll get fined and/or deported," please don't waste your effort responding to this post! I'm curious if anyone has ever been deported from Korea for doing this, or if they've ever been fined, and if so, how much. I already know that he's probably going to get fined or deported. My question is how much will the fine be, or if he's deported, how long will he be banned? |

We caught a guy on a fake degree where I worked previously, and immigration fined him 500,000won and gave him a 10-day exit order. This was about 4 and a half years ago.
He came right back and got a job as a recruiter. |

Your fine and/or deportation orders, like everything else in Korea, will/may be influenced by the immigration dude you get.
Oh, I'm sorry, I mean your friend's fine... |

Haha well done, but why would anyone want to come back here after all the bad crap they experienced?!
Dont tell me he got deported again and then came back a 3rd time and became a Hagwon owner!! |

It's a tough call. The environment is really shaky right now because of some immigration shakeups. I don't think it can be predicted. Worst case is a little jail. Best case they'll toss you out.
Tell your friend to be as contrite and respectful as possible. An attorney wouldn't be a bad idea.

Yes he will most likely be deported.
He will be fined. The school will also be fined (how they deal with the fine is another story...).

Unlikely unless he was on fake papers (he was not).
The only jail time he/she would see is time in a detention centre if he/she is unable to pay the fine and a plane ticket out of here. then they can detain the person until payment is made.
Also, this happened at a bad time with all the new regulations and government initiatives to curb the entry of illegal teachers. I would think your friend would not get much leniency here.
I too advise he/she be contrite and respectful.
It is also true the fine and deportation order may be influence by the immigration person who is on the case but...the fine will happen as will deportation the "immigration dude" cannot change that in this case.
Here is hoping the school also gets fined and is forced to pay up.
At the end of day however, your friend made a choice to roll the dice..he/she just lost the bet and now has to pay up..thats life. |

I hope he doesn't do any jail time. That would be worse than deportation. My heart goes out to him and so do my prayers. I feel for the guy. Its not like he was selling drugs or molesting little children. This kuntry is truly fecked up. |

Thanks guys, that's been helpful. The last thing I'm wondering about is this:
My friend really likes it in Korea (this incident aside) and would like to come back. How long is he likely to be banned for? Two years? Five years? Ten years? Forever? |

I got banned from Thailand for breaking some stupid laws that were no no benefit to anyone except the beaurocrat scum that enforced them .I won't reveal their true nature because it makes me look dark , rebelious and mysterious not to do so . I got let back in because the immigration officer who questioned me at the airport said I looked like a nice guy . Oh ...and I bribed him .

In America, if you are caught by immigration teaching/making money while on a tourist visa, you will be deported as well. Ignorant moron. |

So how long does the ban usually last for teaching illegally? |
