Police arrested two construction workers on suspicion of beating their coworker to death for refusing to drink.
Gwanak Police in southern Seoul said Tuesday that the two offenders, identified only as Lee (42) and Chung (52), beat their colleague Chang (47) to death at another coworker's house in Shillim-dong, Seoul, Saturday.
The two beat the man because Chang refused to go out drinking with them, police officials said. They said their crime was unintentional.
According to the police, the two had beaten Chang habitually, who was mentally challenged. His ill health could have contributed to his death. |

Korea sparkling! Nothing I love more than going by a construction site and seeing workers sitting down to a lunch of soju and that faux cheese sausage. |

This news should ensure that any lightweight entry level employees to mid level managers all over korea should come to their senses and drink when they are bloody well told to. Refusing to drink indeed! |

I could hardly believe how much pressure my first hogwan director exerted on me to join the regular Friday night drinkfest that all his employees were expected to attend.
He didn't care for my excuse that I was an addictive-type personality who would become an alcoholic if I had even one drink - probably because he was an alcoholic himself ... |

I saw Korean construction workers drinking over lunch too. Does seeing that make me a racist as well? |

In all my travels in Asia I have never encountered a drinking culture on such a massive scale as in Korea. It's pathetic, really, and indicative of deeper social problems.
Most Chinese drink only with their meals and usually bottled beer. Hard liquor, or maotai, is usually consumed in moderation at banquets to make toasts. One is considered a thug or low-life if he frequents bars for the sole purpose of drinking. Here it seems to be a badge of honor.
But then I guess Korean males feel they need to be in a stupor to withstand the working environment.
Yet another reason why I would never settle down here. |

What I see here is that the weak and vulnerable get brutally physically assualted without anyone helping them, or any legal recourse. Its the wangta culture I'm afraid. Horrific. If you are disadvantaged in this society....its tough, to make an understatement. |

I'm looking forward to the forced drinking parties. I'm in training right now so I'll be ready. Bottoms up. |
