I'm guessing it is either too much tanning in tanning beds, or the new "spray on" tanning that is getting popular in the US. They are even having "spray on" parties in the USA. The host's spray on is free.

Reminds me a little of the Yamamba/Ganguro/Centre Guy trend that was pretty popular in Japan for a while.
