However, I've never seen the "ornamental" Argentinian flag flown anywhere, and I wouldn't say it's generally recognizable.
Re: Georgia, I was having a chat with my father about it, and he (being a historian) thought the flag should have been the one with St. George's Cross. I looked it up on Wikipedia to confirm, and agreed with him that the current Georgian flag did in fact feature the historical St. George's cross. As it turns out, this was only recently reinstated (http://www.mapsofworld.com/flags/georgia-flag.html) so when the site was made, I suppose it would be correct.
How did you become such a vexing vexillologist? I used to have a quote in my signature on another site that said "All flag experts should be punched." However, you deserve a grudging pat on the back instead. |
To be honest I can't relate any direct experiences of seeing the "Ornamental" Argentine flag flown anywhere. However, the Argentine Football Association uses the blue-white-blue bar sequence (sans sun) on their badge and team uniforms, so soccer fans (a sizable demographic) might recognize the "Ornamental" flag more easily.
Several states in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus had brief periods of independence between the World Wars with different flags from those used today or during the Soviet regime. Who knows, more 'color revolutions' and a shift away from authoritarian governments may see more of these designs being resurrected. Belarus looks to be going down this path, although who knows how long it will take ...
Glad to hear I warrant a pat on the back and not a punch in the stomach (or elsewhere!). My mom bought me a poster for the 1988 Olympics that had a map with all the countries and stickers for each nation's flag. She laminated it for me as well, and it stayed on my wall for quite some time. That's the start of my vexilloligical fascination. I'm also a cultural anthropologist, which may also have an influence on my interest. |

| The Canadian flag takes the prize for being dull and ugly. |

^ God damn self-hating Canuck
The Canadian flag is not my favorite but it is certainly unique and it does stand out. |
