As a Virginian, and a supporter of Virginia Tech, I have to speak up. I hate it when people refer to Virginia Tech as the "massacre/shooting school." VT is a damn good school, with a proud student body.
Every time I tell someone I'm from "Virginia" they always say, "Oh, Virginia Tech shootings."
You know, I love Virginia, and I hate the fact that the only thing people know about it is the shootings at VT. Virginia is the best state in the US, bar none.
Here are some facts about Virginia:
Quote: |
Virginia is popularly known as the "The Old Dominion" and sometimes "Mother of Presidents" or "Mother of States", because it is the birthplace of eight U.S. presidents and its role in being carved into several mid-western states, respectively.
The growth of the technology sector has made computer chips the state's leading export, due in part to the strength of Virginia's public schools and universities; some of which are at the top of national rankings.
As of the 2000 census, Virginia had the highest number of counties and independent cities, fifteen, in the top one-hundred wealthiest jurisdictions in the United States based upon median income. In addition, Virginia tied with Colorado as having the most counties, ten, in the top one-hundred based on per capita income.[72] As of 2007, seven Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in the Richmond area.[73] Virginia has seventeen total Fortune 500 companies, making it rank tenth nationwide. Additionally, ten Fortune 1000 companies are in Northern Virginia, with a total of twenty-nine in the state
Virginia's educational system consistently ranks in the top 10 states on the U.S. Department of Education's National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as "the Nation's Report Card," with Virginia students outperforming the U.S. average in all subject areas and grade levels tested.
According to the U.S. News and World Report annual college rankings, two of the top ten public national universities in the United States are located in Virginia, with only California having more in the top 10.
Not to mention Virginia is home to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Patrick Henry, James Monroe, George Mason, Robert E Lee, Sam Houston, John Marshall, and the list goes on.... |
Here are some facts about Virginia Tech.
Quote: |
Virginia Tech ranked 29th among national public universities and 71st among all national universities.[3] Its College of Engineering undergraduate program was ranked 8th among public engineering schools and 14th in the nation among all accredited engineering schools that offer doctorates. Seven different undergraduate programs in the College of Engineering are ranked in the top 20 among peer programs nationally - the industrial engineering program is ranked 9th; engineering science and mechanics, 8th; civil engineering, 11th; environmental engineering, 14th; mechanical engineering, 14th; aerospace engineering, 14th; and electrical engineering, 17th. Its Pamplin College of Business undergraduate program is ranked 24th among the nation's public institutions and 41st overall.[4] The architecture and landscape architecture programs in Virginia Tech's College of Architecture and Urban Studies are ranked among the very best in America. In its 2008 report, DesignIntelligence (the only national college ranking survey focused exclusively on design) ranked the undergraduate architecture program 1st nationally among both public and private universities. The graduate architecture program ranked 5th in the nation and 1st among public universities.[5] In its 2007 report, DesignIntelligence ranked the universitys undergraduate and graduate interior design programs 7th and 5th respectively.[6]
Programs in the College of Natural Resources consistently rank among the top of their type in the nation. The college's wildlife program is ranked first by its peers, and the fisheries program is ranked second. In a recently published study of the research impact of North American forestry programs, the Journal of Forestry ranked Virginia Tech's programs second on the perceptions-based composite score and third on the citations- and publications-based index. |
Some of you are thinking, "Why should I care?" Well, I don't know. It would just go along way if you said, "Your from Virginia? Isn't that the state that George Washington was born in?"
Or if someone mentions VT shootings, if you just said, "VT is a really good school."
I love Virginia and I want nothing else but for people to remember my State for the good things, not the bad. |

Being from Virginia as well, I do find that whole relationship lumps of conversational fun.
At least you don't have people singing a certain John Denver song to you when you mention where you're from. Associating us Virginians with those heathen West Virginians? West Virginia be damned! |

Dude, "damn good" may be a bit of an exaggeration, given those rankings (not that rankings mean anything, but if you're going to trot them out...).
EDIT:
But yeah, VA has great schools. One of the nation's finest public high schools and one of the nation's finest public universities. |

Up until about half a year ago, my wife honestly thought "Virginia" and "vagina" were the same word. |

Off topic but kinda related, I guess. I wandered around in San Francisco for about 4 hours today with no plan and I'm back in San Jose now. What should I know about this area for the sake of Californians? |

But I'm dead serious. I'm telling the truth.
Speaking of crappy subtitles, I was watching some dumb summer action flick and the guy was rattling off a license plate using the NATO Phonetic alphabet. He said "November 3" for "N3" and they translated it at 11월. I laughed a long time over that one. |

Now that I think about it, at least Virginia gets noticed. Imagine telling Koreans you're from Kansas or Idaho or something. They'd be like, "Oh." |

"I'm from Minnesota. You know Minnesota?"
"No."
"You know Chicago?"
"No."
"You know California? New York? In the middle."
"Oh. I know."
For about two weeks this summer I was able to say, "You know bridge, bridge, like this," while pantomiming a collapsing bridge. But no more... |

Oh, Virginia Tech! That's where that Korean shot down like 30 people! I remember that!
You went to the massacre school? Wow. Are Koreans still allowed to attend? Do they need criminal and medical checks? |
