Personally, I think this is a good idea.

8000 Teachers Sit Same Exam with Students
More than 8, 000 high school teachers took part in an end-of-term exam in the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang on Monday, not as supervisors, but as examinees, local newspaper Shenyang Evening News reported.
The teachers, seated amongst the students, completed the same examination paper, in order to test their professional knowledge on the course they teach. If they score less than 80 points on a 100-point scale, they will be disqualified from receiving future rewards.
This was the first time the mechanism has been adopted in the city.

What does this actually mean? They get fired? They can't get a promotion/move up an echelon? What is this "rewards"? Any guesses? |

I couldn't find any clarification. I very highly doubt that they would be fired, but they might not get raises, promotions, or financial bonuses. |

chinese teachers are kept on a tight leash. they'll probably get dumped in the near future if they don't do well. |

if they can't perform what they are expecting their students to perform, and most likely what they studied to be able to teach in the first place, why should they continue teaching? I follow the same philosophy. In my grammar tests I don't care about spelling because a) I'm focusing on grammar and b) I am not the best speller. On the other hand, on spelling tests and the like, that's the test. |

I always console my kids who blow a TOEFL test or whatever test they have to write by noting that half of Canada couldn't score as well as them.
Maybe I got it wrong, but I think the University of Waterloo is the only university in Canada that requires foreign and native born to pass a test of English language ability some time before they graduate. Lots of students take it every semester and only crack the test their last semester.
This was 20 years ago. My recollection could be faulty. |
