Plan B: How to Disarm Kim Jong Il Without Bombing Him

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Albert Einstein

Plan A, gentle diplomacy, has again failed to disarm Kim Jong Il. Whenever this happens (every time its tried) advocates of doing the same thing over and over again fall back on The False Choice, whether expressly or by implication: its their way or war. They know better, of course, which technically makes this a lie. And usually, this lie stands uncorrected:

People lambaste the six-party process, and sure, it offers no refuge for those in need of instant gratification, Mr. Hill, the negotiator, said in an interview. But when asked for alternatives to the nuclear pact, Mr. Hill said, even the noisiest critics fall silent. [N.Y. Times]

Hill knows better. Last year, North Korea talked him into abandoning the one alternative thats ever succeeded in modifying Kim Jong Ils behavior: economic constriction. In just 17 months, the Treasury Departments sanctions against one small bank in Macau brought Kim Jong Ils palace economy to the brink of the same catastrophe the rest of the North Korean economy reached 15 years ago.

North Korea recently closed it's consulate in Canberra, Australia, as a cost cutting measure.

Yes bring back really strict sanctions and even if a couple of million Koreans die of starvation, I'm sure it'll be all worth it in the end Rolling Eyes.

nobody in those 6 table talks wants kim jongil's state to collapse. it would be too expensive in a number of ways. why the hell do u think north korea's little stalinist dynasty still exists even after it passed what most experts saw as absolute "critical collapse point" somewhere in the mid to late 90s?

Problem with that is that if you were to completely collapse the economy, then what's the motivation NOT to use nuclear weapons?

Millions die from starvation, or from retaliatory bombings... Either way, you're country is screwed. If you're going to go out, may as well go out with a "bang"

I only printed a small, introductory excerpt of a very long article. Obviously, you didn't bother to read.

Neither did you.

If either of you had bothered to read the article, you would have seen that nobody wants North Korea to collapse. That would be a disaster for everyone in Northeast Asia.

1) remove the mine fields, tank walls and other obstacles. take sentries off their DMZ posts. we got satellite, we see any and all above ground troop movements.

2) let him digest that for sometime. no big rush. a thousand year peace cannot and should not be hastily entered.

3)station no international troops within 58 miles of the border. every decade move it another ten miles out.

4) tell him that on a set date south korea is going to normalize relations with north korea. keep the possibilty of reunification on the table.after said date, the south korean side of the border will be no more militarized than than the US/Canadian or Sino-Mongolian borders.

Some one could just shoot him. Use a highpowered rifle from a distance and take him out. Leave clues to put the blame on the Somalis or something, and just wait for the country to go to peieces.

He never looks the same in pictures, especially in the ones taken in the last 5 to 10 years...which leads me believe that the odds would be high that the person taken out would be one of his doubles.
