White Lies:
The Philippines has a problem with this. Many people will lie through their teeth in order to smooth things over and make the opposite party happy. It is somewhat of a cultural phenomenom once you start to know the people you can get a better idea of the scope of it.
These lies are never gross lies but are small lies. In our culture honesty should be observed at all times. This culture in many places allows for dishonesty when the gain of it represents the happiness on another person's behalf.
I lucked out since my wife's family is incredibly religious. Her father is a voracious reader and exposed to more than the world around him. He taught is family that this cultural practice was shameful and that honesty is one of the pillars of riteous living. Her family took it to heart.
Still, you will find this creep up from time to time and for some people it is a deal breaker.
Thank you, yes I have family support...
As for the question about the US visa. You cannot apply for it overseas I believe? You can but by the time it processes you have to be residing in the states. The exception is for U.S. military since they are still considered domiciled in the U.S. while abroad.
I wasn't aware about the aspect of not counting your salary here. Once you file your taxes and report the income. Income is income isn't it? You might have to get a reference.
I was just married in December and we cannot do much until she graduates in two months so I haven't gotten all the details yet.
So I could use some guidance in this area too. I thought I couldn't do anything via the U.S. route since I'm in Korea another year or more. |

Ahhaa! Thanks for the laugh. Little white lies are commonplace in the West. You can see that at work, in relationships and all over.
For example the wife who asks her husband "Do I look fat in these jeans?"
What do you think most men are going to say?
Or the boss who says "I came up with this idea and I think it's great." (To the employee). "What's your opinion?"
What do you think most employees are going to say?
And on and on. Don't get the idea that the West is some bastion of honesty. Just as many lies are told there as here...it's just that certain lies or fibs are more culturally acceptable in one place than another. |

Yeah I met some nice girls in Thailand, hell it seems the dating scene there is a bit better than here.
If by one of those guys you mean good taste in women or something than I might have to agree there |

Daughter of Issan, first time I've heard that, but I like it.
My wife is from Ubon Ratchathani. I was wondering where your wife is from? |

The English service at any catholic church in the country will be full of them.
You can also pick your favorite Filipino store, sit down, have a coffee and wait for them to come in. Strike up a conversation and go from there.

What's the visa process for bringing your Thai wives to Korea?
Is it same as the Filipinas? |

Same for bringing any foreign spouse. Very easy if you have the paperwork at hand. |

Yeah Thai girls are nice. But there is a chasm between the cultures that is much greater than what would be experienced with a filipina. The US owned the Philippines for 50 years and they are comfortable with much of American culture. Although I have met many nice Thai women I honestly think I could never be more than a boyfriend. From what I have observed I am very happy I married a Filipina. There's the dowry system and all that "show of wealth" loss of face garbage that just makes life too complicated from what I have observed. You better be careful about commenting on how dating in Korea can be a bit hard. Some of the resident "playboys" will start giving you a hard time for being a loser, burger flipping, toolbox who could only date fat chicks back home. Nearly everyone I met in Thailand who has come from Korea disses the daing scene there. Very few people I knew there ever dated seriously. Please don't get me started on the "myth" of easy Korean gals. |
