|
|
I know there has not been a ton of responses for the UFC threads, but I thought it may be interesting to start a little pool for the next event.
Directions Pick the following 3 things for each of the 5 fights listed below.
#1 Winner
* Name of winner
#2 Round
* 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or decision for the Tim Sylvia vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira fight.
* 1st, 2nd, 3rd or decision for the other 4.
#3 Method
* Submission
* Technical Knock Out
* Knock Out
* Unanimous Decision
* Majority Decision
* Split Decision
* Draw
Tim Sylvia Vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
Frank Mir Vs. Brock Lesnar
Jeremy Horn Vs. Nate Marquardt
Ricardo Almeida Vs. Alan Belcher
Gleison Tibau Vs. Tyson Griffin
Points
1 For winner
1 For round
1 For method
Ties will be decided by most points in the title fight, followed by the Mir/Lesner fight. Deadline for entry will be the start of the televised fights.
Example
Sylvia  1st round  TKO
Hope someone gets some fun out of this. |

Nice - great idea, Jaws.
Here are my picks. And by putting them on first, I get to claim that any and all who beat me did so by stealing my ideas.
Noguiera - 3rd round - big Timmy taps out
Mir - 2nd round - Lesnar uses all his roid rage up and has no gas left - taps out before having his shoulder dislocated by a much better ground fighter
Marquardt - 2nd round - TKO (I hope so anyway - can't stand Gumby Horn)
Belcher - 1st round - TKO
Griffin - 1st round - TKO (that little guy punches hard and fast)
Also, any extra points for predicting that Joe Rogan says something to make himself sound like a total doofus? Or Dana White makes some surprise, life-changing announcement after the title fight, touting the next great fighter to come in and turn the UFC on its head (a la Cro Cop, Henderson, that African Assassin dude)? |

I think "runlikegump" has picked the most logical winners so I'll just adjust the round and method:
Nogueira - unanimous decision
Mir - submission - 3rd round
Marquardt - TKO - 3rd round
Belcher - KO - 2nd round
Griffin - TKO - 2nd round |

Actually, I doubt that all the most logical picks will win. Upsets have been the rule for the most part in high-profile UFC matches.
As a casual fan, the only two matches I'm really interested in are Lesnar-Mir and Silvia-Nogueira.
I'm pretty sure that Lesnar will officially be favored to win, and the promoters would certainly love to have him emerge as a dominant force.
Though he lacks the technical skills and experience of Mir he figures to be able to take him down, and he may be able to overpower him by his big size and strength advantage. Plus, he's naturally mean and aggressive.
I figure that if he fails to KO or seriously hurt him right away though, then Mir gets the chance to utilize his submission skills.
I really expect that Lesnar will probably win, but since I don't like him and don't want to root for him, I won't pick him to win.
I don't care much for Silvia either (though I'd root for him against Lesnar...) Since I like Heath Herring - who should have beaten Nogueira the last time they fought - I prefer to see Nogueira win, setting up yet another rematch with Herring (who he has beaten three times...)
But first, Herring has to get by dangerous Cheik Kongo at UFC 82 on March 1...

Vegas:
TIM SYLVIA+150
ANTONIO RODRIGO NOGUEIRA -190
FRANK MIR +130
BROCK LESNAR-165
My concern about Lesnar is a wrestlers propensity to sprawl. Anyone who has wrestled will tell you the sprawl makes it harder for the guy on the bottom to escape; the issue is in the UFC an extended arm will be broken real quick.
Can a career wrestler avoid using tactics that are so inbred in his skill set? |

I guess I understand Lesnar's cockiness - he's probably always been the biggest, baddest guy in the room. But I think he's not even close to having the skill set necessary to be in this room. Sure, he could knock Mir out - anyone can knock anyone out - or slam him down hard - no one could look at Lesnar and doubt his strength - but my problem with him is that he has no respect for the nuance of MMA. He talks on the website preview and in the M&F article about the joys of beating people up for a living - the guy is exactly what the occasional viewer or the public at large thinks MMA fighters are, just big dumb bullies. I want to see him lose in the most technical way possible, tapping out of a kimura or going to sleep in a triangle choke. If he wins, he sets the sport back years in terms of the public understanding of the finesse it takes to excel in the Octagon. |

I totally agree. I hope Mir beats him bad. |

Tim Sylvia- Unanimous Decision after 5 rounds of dry humping against the fence
Brock Lesnar - TKO round 2 from gnp. i think the fix is in for this one. he's too marketable to get squashed out in his first UFC appearance.
Nate Marquardt- Unanimous Decision
Ricardo Almeida - submission round 1
Tyson Griffin - TKO round 1
honestly, i suck at calling these. good advice is to pick everything i don't.

Almeida over Yundt - 1st round - submission
Total crap shoot - I got a couple shiny coins for anyone here who can honestly say that they've ever even seen this guy's name before today. Some guy with no UFC experience, despite his formidable record in The Alaskan Fighting Championships (egads), and he gets main card action on three days notice. Maybe he's Rogan's nephew. |
