Right. I agree with you demophobe, I was just saying that the apps people are using the most right now are generally not multi-threaded. The main advantage is that the core2 architecture is superior to other chips on the market.

All true, but in a very real sense computers became fast enough to run spreadsheets, wordprocessors and browsers a long time ago. More power doesn't change the fact that I rarely see my desktop's CPU (A64 Venice 3000) go above 10% usage except in games. My AMD Geode Everun can play DivX movies just fine.

Fast enough? For who? Wink

Archives, audio/video encoding, ripping music and movies...I would call all of these activities 'mainstream' these days. Yeah, if you only use Word, Firefox and watch movies...heck, you might as well dumb down to linux. Laughing

I am not sure the CPU usage is what is being discussed here anyhow. If we are, then look at the benchmarks between your CPU and my 'lowly' E6550. This clearly illustrates a common application being handled much more efficiently by different CPUs. If you think 115 pages is extreme, then just do the math to a size that is more understandable or realistic, as the case may be.

Neat chart, that one. You can choose the CPU vs. CPU then the benchmark.

I agree that there is a time when time becomes negligible; the returns are so insignificant. However, the Conroe core rocks. When Intel get it right, they nail it. AMD used to do that...once upon a time. Let's hope for a comeback with later Phenoms.

When your inbox gets spammed by some sociopath whose only mission is to spread vile PMs right from the get-go, you will see why the policy is a good one.

Agreed that if you're going to use it then you should certainly buy it. All too many people though, get something because it's faster, without running the price/value equation. When I got my Venice it was IMO the best value for money. Now it's sadly lacking compared to the newer CPUs out there and I'd love to upgrade- except there's not much in the way of socket 939 options right now, and I generally remind myself that the games I play run just fine. (Warcraft 3 and such.)

That's ridiculous for many reasons, but suffice to say that a chain is only as strong as the weakest link.

Core is better but AMD platform LIGHT ages better then Intel shit.. Ugh.. Intel Graphic cards want to stab my eyes out with a fucking rusty chopstick(if they rust)

For cheap laptops I'd go with AMD cause PUMA beats the shit out of Intel Centrino 1 and 2.
