Hey techies,

I'm looking at buying one of these dslrs. Both of them come with a 18-55mm lens, but the Nikon also has a 55-200mm lens. Prices are similar. Is it a better idea to go for the Nikon and have the extra lens, or do the advantages of the Canon out weigh the extra lens?

I'm a bit of a moron when it comes to taking pics, but the 400D/Kiss/Rebel xti/whatever seems to help me a bit. The pics in my avatar were taken using the Kiss x...crappy name, but a nice little camera. It also looks like the prices have dropped a fair amt compared to when I bought the camera for my wife shortly after it first came out. Sorry, don't know much about the nikon.

After looking around some of those sites it looks like either of the cameras might be okay, depending on lots of factors. Most sites say that the canon is a much better camera, feature-wise. Most also say that the nikon is better, picture-wise(depending on where you're taking pics). Both of them offer pitiful std lens kits. The canon is much better for lens usability, especially when it comes to using the lenses of other companies. Maybe you should buy the basic canon, minus the lens, and look at some of the other recommended lenses?

A couple of other sites also mentioned the pentax k10d being a much better camera than the two you mentioned, although it's a bit more expensive.

Although the D40 might be a little better than my D50, I read that it takes specific lenses which means that your older ones may not be compatible anymore. Someone with a D40 may be able to confirm that.

From what I've heard the Canon is more popular among casual users (my sister got the 400D instead of the Nikon) as it is very easy to use.

If I were you I would go to a place like PixDix where they have both cameras on display and have a little play with them.

You'd be suprised at how different they feel in your hand so I'd then suggest you pick the one that feels most comfortable.

Also, are you dead-set on those models?? It's just that Canon announced that the 450d is going to be released in very soon. Nikon are also expected to announce a new DSLR that is rumoured to be replacing the D40x in the next few days.

My D50 doesn't have an internal drive either (don't think D70 had one too).

And yes :

"D40 isn't fully backward compatible with most older Nikkor lenses"

because some of the older lenses rely on the built-in AF feature on the camera instead of the lenses. This means that the D40 only take the later lenses with built-in AF. Might be a problem if you already have some existing expensive lenses.

I wouldn't go for this as the D50 and D70 would probably go for a little cheaper being older models.

Guess it just depends on what floats your boat. I'm not a big time camera user... but my dad is very much into them. He swears by canon. But then again he doesn't have a problem with people using Nikons either.

We just got a non DSLR non pocket camera... something like a super zoom or whatever... again I don't know much about cameras but its a Panasonic lumix DMC FZ18 and we are really happy with it. Seems like an awsome little camera for a beginer. It has a really good zoom and its pretty easy to use.

Some of my better pictures are better than ones my dad took with his canon 1D mark III or what ever the heck it is... on the other hand the good pictures he took blow mine out of the water...

Used Cannon lenses are everywhere. So are Nikon, but at the shops there tends to be a lot more selection of Cannon lenses vs Nikon.
