Hey I live in Daegu/Taegu and I am wondering what I should do for Lunar New Years vacation? I have 5 days off and I don't wanna spend them on my ass, yah know???

So give me some ideas!!!

Yeah might have finished already but my student says he was going to go the day after lunar ie the friday i think so it might still be on...Who knows...Call the number in the website and check

Nah, the Taebaek Snow Festival is still agogo. I'm heading there on Friday. It's on until the 3rd February.

I went to the Taebaek Snow festival last weekend. I left Saturday and got there late Saturday night, then spent Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon at the festival. It was packed full of people. I had a lot of fun but it was pretty difficult to find a place to stay and get back to Seoul.

However I do have some warnings:

I took the train from Cheongyangi station - if you take the train I recommend buying tickets ahead of time so that you have a seat. I didn't have a seat on the way back and it wasn't a very comfortable ride.

If you plan on staying the night you should make sure you get someone to help you book a minbak or a hotel room well ahead of time. I went on the spur of the moment and almost didn't have somewhere to stay. The hotel owner took pity on me and put me up in the ajummoni cleaning room (a normal room where they store linens and the maids leave their uniforms and such). I got really lucky. They were extremely nice to me but they didn't speak a lot of English - and I don't speak enough Korean.

The festival was a lot of fun - I come from a town without any real snowfall so it was a real novelty for me to see so much snow. I tried to get information from the organizers of the festival about where some of the activities were and it was hard for them to communicate with me. It took several tries before finding someone who could help. Again everyone was really nice - but it was just hard to communicate.

Getting back to the train station was difficult. I couldn't find the bus stop - and taxis weren't coming up to the festival entrance anymore. I had to walk back down to the main road where a police officer told me I could wait for a bus to take me to the bus terminal near the train station. Only not in so many words. I waited for an hour and a half and then walked the kilometer back to the hotel and had them call a taxi. The taxi never got there because of traffic gridlock and I ended up bumming a ride from a different taxi who charged me and the couple in the car separately.

So make sure you can get back to the bus terminal or train station in time. If it's anything like it was this weekend there will be ridiculous traffic.

Bring ice cleat if you have them - it's quite slippery and people will shove past you on the narrow walking paths. If you're not careful you'll get hurt.
