|
|
In case some people down in the deep south(outside of Busan) don't know about it there is a pretty good and cheapish mexican restaurant in masan in changdong. has been there a couple of years and is always full of people, surprisingly the majority are Koreans.
Haven't seen another foreigner in there the last 3 times i have gone so thought I would get the word out....
Make my way there about once every 6 weeks-2 months or so. Always delicious, especially the chicken fajitas. |

If we are thinking of the same place, my Korean friend says she used to work there. She said the owner used to live in Mexico for years and regularly takes trips back for real ingredients. I say everybody should petition him to come to Seoul. |

billy,
now why ya wanna do that? what do you have against masan? guess how many western non-franchised kind of places we have? and you want to take them all?
please...no.
it is all right for korea, but wouldn't make it as mexican food elsewhere. more like mexi-CANNED food.
but, its location is etched on my mind with good memories. |

That would be the one...his wife is Mexican so I think they go back together and he gets ingredients when he is there.

The problem is, when you haven't lived in a western country for 9 years and most of those 9 years you have been out in the countryside of some country it tastes pretty good to me. |

say "changdong" to the local taxi man. find the lotteria fast food joint. notice the alley across the street. go down the alley. notice "joyce's"- one of masan"s two western bars. god place. keep walking. next section of alley down see sign on right says " mexico". enter. eat. enjoy. go back to joyce's.
PM for private tours. my fees are cheap. quesadillas sound fair. |

I make my own chili and tortillas (flour) all the time. If anyone wants a recipe, they can email me at [email protected]
I make vegetarian and beef chili, but I found a Pakistani market that has lamb, and my next batch will be in that direction.
I also make a lot of Italian food, or whatever I can without an oven. Give me tomato paste and spices, and I can whip up anything. Finding the spices is the tough part, but they can be ordered online or a one time trip to Costco and a big wallet can get you spices enough for a year.
I've given up on Korean food and now only cook my own. It saves a lot of money and it tastes so much better than anything I've had here.

It's in Hayang which is about 30 minutes east of Daegu.
It's 16,000 for about 2 kilos of boneless Aussie lamb or 5,000 for shaved lamb, maybe 500 grams, but I'm not sure of that size. They are both great, and the guy carries canned Indian foods and spices.

That's probably the best news I've heard since I got here. I've only eaten lamb twice in the last 6-months and that was in Shanghai.
I may need to pester you for more specific details (location etc) if it's alright with you. |

I get where you are coming from on being able to put things together that taste good here. I pretty much only cook at home with the basics that I am able to get. I have a small oven, so that helps. My Westernized kgf has told me for some time that I need to have my own restaurant, and she has traveled throughout the world. I'm not there yet with my cooking skills though. |

What ever you need, just ask. I am pretty new here, and in a small town, so I am very lucky to have a place that sells lamb. Spices are another thing, but I've made Curry lamb and lamb tikka several times. I also made a lamb stew with potatoes, carrots, garlic, and lamb, with a little flour for thickening and quite a bit of black pepper. I cooked it all in my rice cooker and it was divine.
I have no foreigners to share with down here, I'm afraid, so I have to eat it all myself bwa-ha-ha.
Cheers,

^Nice one Mike. I'll PM you for the specifics. I'm only 30-minutes from Daegu myself so getting up there wont be a problem.
Cheers fella. |

This is how i find it...
*When you get to masan get a taxi to Changdong but say Core bakery(코아 빵집). All the taxis know where it is, a bit of a Masan instituation.
*The taxi should drop you off under an arch that runs across the street. Look for the pedestrian mall across the street from the bakery and walk up it.
*About halfway up the mall you will come across a "SHOW" telephone shop on the left, turn left down the little alley just before it.
*When you start walking you should be able to see the sign "MEXICO" and you are there... |
