Anyone know if it is normal to be asked to hand over your original degree AFTER you arrive in the Country and ALREADY have E2 visa and Alien card?
I have had many visas in Korea, the last E2 being given in October 2006. At no other time have I been told I had to hand over original degree to the school (so they can take it to the MOEd for verification) after I aleady had visa.
I just presume the school are doing this for some sort of added security regarding first month employees.
Or have the rules changed and this is a new requirement?

never hand over your degree to the school.
tell them to figure out another way to accomplish what they want, or tell them to find another teacher. |

No problem, dude...everyone hands over their original diploma to their boss when they get here, it's more satisfying that way. |

It's common, but it's not normal.
Don't ever give him/her your passport or diploma, no matter what. If you do, you'll probably come to regret it. Some bosses do that to discourage employees of quitting. Some people have claimed that their bosses damaged or destroyed their diplomas for no apparent reason. |

this request comes from the largest school in seoul.
it is unbelievable they employ these tactics to try and gain more insurance on their teachers not leaving.
ie) illegal tactics. |

Did you ask them why they want it? It might have sth to do w/ registering you w/ the ministry of ed'n. Maybe. A copy should suffice...I suppose a certified copy might be better. I'd be hesitant to give them the original. |

Some of you people have been here for years and you still think there is no reason your school needs your diploma?
In some cities, i don't know about Seoul, your school has to show it to the Education Ministry when they register you.
Hey, inseoul, maybe you can beg them? |

I'm not saying they never need it. Just don't give it to them unless you consult the other foreign teachers at the school first. If you're the only foreign teacher and the Ministry of Education needs to see it when they register you? Go with them. |
