gay film and having Allah as the coach. The ultimate test of freedom of expression. What would really tip the scales is if it was done in the Davinchi code style. Like all the Muslims were trying to hide this big conspiracy and it was uncovered by IGTG. |

Sounds like you've been busy working on the script. |

I'm sure somebody will make one. It would be quite funny. Have them blow on the recitation. |

Yeah, we would be rushing out the

(Netherlands) - The Dutch were debating the limits of freedom of expression last week after an artist who photographed Gay men wearing masks of the prophet Muhammad was forced into hiding and her work removed from a museum exhibit.
Speaking on the telephone from an unspecified location in the Netherlands last week, the artist, an Iranian exile who goes by the pseudonym of Sooreh Hera, said she had been threatened with execution. For her part, Hera, who fled Iran seven years ago, says she has no regrets, particularly when she thinks about the young men and women being hanged there for offending the countrys code of sexuality. I do it for them, she said, for the boys and girls with no freedom in Iran. |

It's a fascinating situation. On the one hand, you have hypersensitive religious immigrants (or the children of immigrants) and on the other hand, you have bigots who want to provoke them into displays of anger so they appear to want to change the traditional tolerant nature of Dutch society. Abuse the right of free expression in ways designed to provoke the other into looking like the bad guys, so you can point at them and say, "See, I told you. They're bigots and they hate our freedom. They should be kicked out."
It's not that far from the thinking of the slave masters who prevented slaves from being educated or earning any reward for their labor and then pointing at them and saying, "See, they're too lazy and stupid to be free."
The Germans forbid Holocaust deniers a public forum without significant loss of freedom of speech. Maybe the Dutch ought to consider a similar kind of law on deliberately anti-Moslem 'art'. |

The artist is an Iranian muslim who was protesting the treatment of homosexuals in Iran. She was trying to use the Dutch tradition of freedom to protest the thugs in her home country. But the thugs followed her, and ya-ta compares her to a slave master.
You're right. This is fascinating. A muslim protesting Iranian treatment of gays gets called out for being a "slave master" by a lefty white American man.

Not to be outdone by his previous assertion that a gay muslim who criticizes Iranian brutality against gays is a slave master, now ya-ta is comparing Holocaust denial to the critical evaluation and exposure of islam. |

I gotta agree with peel here. Freedom of speech is freedom of speech, you don't get to cherry pick what is acceptable speech. That's why you can deny the holocaust in the US.
You can't start going down that slope without slipping depending on whose deciding what's acceptable speech. I think most of what come out of conservatives mouth's is hateful and it makes me want to punch them, which is clearly not as bad as wanting to blow myself up, but that's on me, not on them. |

I was speaking to the general phenomenon, rather than this one specific case; more about the guy mentioned the other day. (I don't really see how an Iranian in Holland is going to effectively protest treatment of gays in Iran, but that isn't what I was talking about.) That should have been clear from my post. I muddled my position by mentioning art and I shouldn't have. I had those Danish cartoons in mind.
I considered the slippery slope argument, but decided against it. The real threat to freedom of expression is coming from those who use the shelter of the right to abuse it. |

Sure sure. Nice try. Maybe now you will call Obama an "Uncle Tom" for pulling an establishment line rather than joining the new black panther party, eh? See, I would never do that because I know that culture/race/ethnicity are social constructions and that some social constructions are far more humane than others. People like me defend individual rights regardless of the constructed tribe that may be in question.
A gay muslim woman protesting the hanging of her kin in Iran as a "slave master".
And I'm the one who doesn't respect Western values. Heh.
It was what you were talking about. But you were too honest this time and got caught. Nice-uh! |

I agree with Yata Boy in part. I doubt that these artists were just going along their merry way, innocently producing artistic explorations of religious themes, and were shocked to discover that their works had offended Muslim extremists. Clearly, by this point, it is pretty foreseeable that this kind of art is gonna produce a pretty negative reaction from the extremists.
I disagree with YaTa's proposals for a new law, as such legislation would, in effect, be a blasphemy law, which is not something I think we should be implementing in western democracies. But I'm against Germany's holocaust-denial laws as well. |

And so what? A gay muslim trying to use artistic expression to undo the intolerance in her culture. Can you find no examples in our culture of art being used for similar purposes?
Is the artist holding the mentality of a "slave master" for not wanting gay muslims to be hung?
What the hell do Western people stand for anymore? |
