I've been reading about life in the U.S. lately. The subprime fiasco is just beginning to affect the economy, as in you ain't seen nothing yet. Many more will lose their homes, and if the Fed keeps cutting rates to zero, it'll just encourage more reckless financial behavior like the first set of cuts did after the 2001 terrorist bombing.

But back to the original point. Korea isn't a model for foreigner friendly countries, but well, you could do worse. Here, foreigners can make money, own property, not really worry about violent crime, and the like. I've met many lifers here who are not ethnically Korean, and they seem to really like it (otherwise why would they be here so long?).

Korea, like life, is what you make of it.

Don't take the negative opinions of people with shittty attitudes here. It's just like anywhere else in the world, do you try to fit in? Do you try to make friends? Do you try to accept the cultures and customs? I saw some foreigners earlier today who the locals seemed to love because they knew how to act, and the had a big smile on their face too.

There are some people on here who love to complain, but won't consciously acknowledge it.

The fact is there are lots of people who do try what you stated below and still have a lot of difficulties.

I've taken to spitting on the ground every few minutes, urinating in public, becoming stupidly drunk, turning the heat up in my apartment to broil temperatures, speaking incredibly loudly, and throwing my trash on the ground. I've even begun to turn my fan off at night, have ceased my whistling, and cover everything I eat with anchovies and garlic, even my breakfast cereal. Nothing seems to work. Please help me Dr. Kwon!

If your white and male most Koreans go out of their way to treat you like sh*t. On the other hand if your white and female most Koreans go out of their way to make you happy so they can have sex with you.

Not always, because I have had the experience of having my application to rent an apartment by various land lords in the Masan area orally rejected, because I am a foreigner. But I am not by any stretch of the imagination labeling all Koreans as such. But clearly racism exists here like one would expect from a homogenous country. It exists in the USA and other countries as well, but the difference is, if I have had refused to rent a room to a foreigner in my country, they would have probably sued me for everything I have. Shocked

Actually you CAN refuse to rent a room to a foreigner in your country...you just can't tell him that's why you're rejecting him.

You could say that there was a mistake on his application, or that the room was already taken or any number of things.

If you think this kind of thing does not go on in the West...you are quite mistaken. There are any number of ways to block someone who you might consider a risk...or just don't like.

For the most part, I think Korea does a good job. Banking is the one area where Korea stands out as being foreigner unfriendly. I get better and better service as time goes on, but I see more and more complaints from others. Aside from that, I think Korea does well.

If you're American, there are a lot of Canadians who will gripe at you ad nauseum about American foreign policy no matter how anti-Bush you are. That's probably the worst part of being a foreigner in Korea.

Most Koreans are cool, but there are a few people who will look down on you for interracial dating and for being a minority, but that's par for the course in any country.

except in the US there is a disaproval of overt racism in the upper levels of society. In other words just because they drag black people in lower Mississippi doesn't mean the rest of us are all quiet about. In Korea even my nice korean teachers have begged me to date one of the western teachers. Rolling Eyes

comparative referencing... have to compare to other east asian countries - japan, china and taiwan.

Korea is the least friendly of the 3 countries - taiwan being on Korea's heels for top spot. I attribute the lack of friendliness to over-competitiveness. Even my korean friends can go a little strange once in a while. It's usually because they are trying to compete despite the fact there isn't anything to compete about.
