"It started slowly with two death threats against Apolo. Then they followed by posting dozens and dozens of hate messagesI had to take down Ohno Zone in order to prevent them from continuing to post messages. I also called the FBI to inform them about the death threats," explained Noelle Neu.

The Ohno Zone was put back on line on Wednesday, but carried a notice saying it would go offline periodically as a precaution.

Some South Koreans have threatened to attack Ohno if he comes here for the World Cup event from Nov. 28 to 30 in Chonju, North Cholla Province. Some of the messages posted contained graphic threats of violence and obscenities. Neu confirmed that the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses of the computers used to post the comments showed they originated in Korea.

Against a backdrop of Internet death threats and a Korean newspaper report calling him "the most-hated athlete in South Korea," U.S. short-track speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno is asking for security assurances before he decides to compete at a Nov. 28-30 World Cup event in Jeonju City, South Korea.

Reason 10000000000000000000000 I am against reunification.

Koreans don't forive or forget , for the most part (in this case Ohno won fair and square and he's just a onvenient whipping post for the anti-American and anti-Japanese zealots who control the media and run the country), unless it's a Korean doing the suppoed injustice.

This supposed uproar over a damned skater and a stupid olympic medal masks sinister demons that would go into full play as a "united" Korea would then g oon to bully China and Japan.

Like a naughty child, it must learn to behave before it gets support, encouragement, rewards and international respect.

I hope Ohno wins, simply because the virulent jingoist crybabies deseve a euphamistic bitchslap.

Cheers,

Joe

I think you are slightly wrong on that. the hateful few Koreans don't forgive or forget until they have a new target to blame their problems on.

But I think most people have moved on.

The successor to Gus Hiddinck as coach of the Korean soccer team. I may have misspelled his name. They lost to Bulgaria yesterday at home as well as to Vietnam and Oman last month. His ass is on the chopping block.

Humberto Coehlo's the 2nd manager after Hiddink - they promoted the former Olympic team manager to take over immediately after Hiddink's departure, but he was dunted out the door only 3 months into the job after questioning the KFA's interference in his team selection.

Coehlo is unpopular already, but I think he'll get the Asian Cup to try and save himself.

Well maybe in your world but my middle school boys talk about him all the time. He is synomous with cheating and evil. I am not over exagerating either. They have a deep imbedded hatred of this person.

Hell, I never heard of short track before I came here.

They are not "letting it go". I dont' think they are getting much encouragement from the parents to let it go either.

I love this place but the blame game is a popular sport here.

I don't know which these people hate worse: Ohno himself or the fact that 99.9% of people in the U.S. have no idea who Ohno is.

MY god some middle schools students brought him up yesterday. I am sick of hearing about Ohno. This one girl insisted that American bribe the judge. What a load of bull.
I tried to find the word for poor sport in korean in my dictionary. I couldn't find it though.

An Chong Hwan didn't exactly help diffuse the issue when he made that provocative "skating" gesture following his equaliser against the US in the WC group match did he? FIFA normally cracks down on nonsense like that and discplines players who inflame crowds (as Gascoine/Fowler et al found out) but in this case maybe Korea's joint host status perhaps prevented it.

The fact is it was anything but good natured banter.

When the society's role models behave like morons....reach your own conclusions

actually Ohno served a purpose in my classroom. Before last exams, I brought up ohno and asked the students what they thought. Words like cheater, not fair etc come up. So then I asked if they feel so bad about cheating, why are the answers to the test written on their desks, walls, backs of chairs. . . .that got em, and a flurry of erasing ensued. I threw in some "let thee without sin cast the first stone" kinda stuff too just for good measure.

Before coming here, I never paid much attention to Winter Olympics but one of the first things my student asked me was, "Do you know Ohno?". Then they went on about 'explaining' the events to me. I told them that I'm Australian and don't care about the Winter Olympics because we just had the Summer Games...Anyhoot, 2 years later- kids are still going on and on and on about the whole thing!

I believe the fact that the Korean Sports Foundation nor the media are doing nothing to help set the facts straight re this skating event the anti-american/anti-ohno campaign will just continue.

I hope Ohno wins

Don't bother. Say "moosheekan saram" as in "Uncultured Person."

It's about the same, imo.

Do you think a country that replays all of their 2002 World Cup games(even though they didn't win), is going to forget about the national shame of losing to an American, but a Japanese American to boot?

I don't think so . . .
