So my director just informed me that I MUST work this Saturday and that it is law because the hagwon has to be open so many days a month and if we dont work this saturday we wont make it because of Lunar New Year.

I asked him if this is over time for me and he said no. I personally dont care if I work saturday, but I do care about being farsed. This sounds like a crock of sh#@ to me.... any of you been told the same thing?

This sounds like a crock to me. I think he had made a deal with the parents to have classes on Saturday in order to meet the 20 classes a month that most hagwons use as a standard month. This is not unheard of, but it could have been handled better. The owner should have let you teachers know about the possibility of Saturday work as soon as he could.

Say yes on one condition:

In any month that has more than 20 working days, you get any excess days off.

Everyone knows contracts aren't worth the paper they're written on here. So you want to take a Saturday off. Just insist on it. You'll eventually win, and that's all there is to it. If you bow down, expect to work a lot more Saturdays.

You're absolutely right about contract, but my bosses have never come out and said that the contract is worthless- whenever I point to it and insist on it being followed they have always been at a loss for words. Because of this it usually works.
I can't speak for all Koreans though of course.

But yes, if you work this Saturday, expect to work more. My experience with Korean bosses is that, changing an old cliche, "if you give 'em a millimetre, they're take a whole goddamn continent." Sometimes being flexible is not a virtue and rather seen as weakness.

Maybe this law really exists though; ask the boss to see it in writing from a legitimate gov't source.

That's a bit of horsesh1t. Contract says no Saturdays = NO SATURDAYS.

Contracts act as guides where YOU, the employee, decide where to let things slide.

I'd tell the boss to eat me.

OP,

What's this "required by law to be open so many days" BS? What the hell is that? And no overtime? What kind of a blockhead is your boss? I'd rip him a new hole in his body.

Why do you even need to ask?

I've always stood by what my contract has said in the past, in all cases simply because that is what a contract is for.

If someone is sick I'll help out once or twice, more than 30 hours without overtime Hahahah.

Even if Mr. Bossy Dildohead can't provide all 30 teaching hours Mon to Fri, or if it's not withing the contracted schedule, it's too bad so sad. "Pay me OT!" Even if you've only got 11 hours teaching during the week, it's "Pay up in full, peanut head!"

Right. There's an old Navy saying: "Do it once and it's a favor; do it twice and it's your job." Well, the Korean version is obviously, "Do it once and it's your job."

About 4 years ago there was a heavy snowfall and the hagwon I was working at closed for the day. I was really happy as it was a Wednesday. Then Friday night they told me I had to come in to work Saturday. I said I really didn't want to, but I would anyways. Well due to lack of students, I worked maybe a full hour. Played Jenga with the few that did show up and was then taken out for a nice King Crab dinner.

A friend of mine works in Pyeonchong and she has to work Sundays for three weeks in a row to compensate for the three days off. Also, she doesn't get paid extra for it. In fact, she loses money if she refuses to work the Sundays.

Me on the other hand, I'm off from this Saturday until the following Monday (nine days vacation). My coworker is going back to Canada and they can't run the school with one person.

Whoopee. This is why, even though my hagwon is flawed, it has the ability to completely redeem itself.
