Does anyone out there have an editing/writing job or know someone who does? What's the job like? Do you/they like it?
I have an interview with a school to write scripts for text books and am wondering if anyone has any experience with that or knows anything about it. |

I did it for a short time and it's really boring. You can get paid more then teaching, but then again it pretty much consists of sitting at a computer for 9 hours a day. |

Depends on what kind of writing. Conversational listening scripts are the easiest to write, IMO. If you are doing a lot of academic topics -like TOEFL stuff- it is time consuming and boring.
PM me if you want to know about what you should expect payment wise.... |

I have the interview tonight, so I don't have details yet about what kind of writing it is.
I can't PM yet, but I believe the salary is 2.3 won/month, plus airfare and housing. |

I used to write textbooks for my TOEFL academy. I enjoy it more than teaching because it is more challenging than teaching and allows for more freedom (in terms of creativity and time-management). I make 2.8 plus housing each month.
I won't complain. |

I'm thinking of looking for editing/writing work. The main thing that bothers me about it is having to sit for such long hours a day at a computer. Better for my health to be in a job where I move body around like teaching. But looking for better pay is appealing too. |

Just to give you an idea, a set of 100 listening questions runs about 600-1 million won on the market. 2.3? Even with housing, you'd be better off teaching and writing in your spare time. That salary is insulting. |

Interesting, but what do you mean by a set of 100 TOEFL listening questions? I've never heard of them being prepared this way.
The questions are inextricably linked to listening passages, and since there are only 5-6 questions per conversation or lecture, does that mean the company you're referring to is requesting 15 or so listening passages for those 100 questions? I sure hope not, as 600-1 million won would be equally insulting for all that work!
So perhaps I'm missing something. Please clarify, as I always like to keep abreast on the going rates for this kind of work. Additionally, let me know if you've found any decent rates on reading passages. |

Comparable to rates I've seen.
For example, 50 questions for 600,000.

What are the requirements for such positions?
Anyone with any details about these kinds of jobs, please PM me. I would really appreciate info, for future reference (I will be going home for a bit and could do some extra studying). |

Same here. I'm looking for a part time position, ideally one where I can work from home/my own computer. My work will most likely give me permission so that I can add it to my visa (I talked to the sub-director, and she said she thought it would be fine).
I have experience doing editing and proofreading back in Canada, and I'm going to ask some of my Korean friends who may have connections. I'd still appreciate any heads-up about editing jobs here. |

It's cheaper to just get writers back in the UK, Canada, or the USA. Everyone wants info on the jobs, but this info is guarded, and there's a reason for this.
One guy I know was here for about 9 years. He did a ton of work and paid his dues. He made some decent coin, but concentrated on the relationships. Now, he's pulling over 100K a year from the U.S. just writing textbook content and tests.
The funniest line I ever heard came from a guy who does a lot of recording. Someone asked him what he did, so he answered, 'I record.' The other guy said that he would love to get involved in that kind of work. Really, said the recording guy? Good luck, then!
Why introduce more competition into the ranks. Just doesn't make sense. Good luck, though! |
