I chose option 4.

Only because of the money though or I'd be there in a second.

Have vacationed there 3 times and loved it each time. Tokyo once, Osaka once and a weekend visa trip to Fukuoka.

I just stayed in one of the big chain hotels. Was around 70,000 Korea Won per night. If you used a hostels website, I bet you could get cheaper. I stayed a week in downtown Osaka once for eqvt 30,000 K Won a night....

Fukuoka is cool for a two nighter.

Not much in the way of nightlife I'm afraid, but the big lake park there is beautiful and the modern art museum in it;s grounds superb, as is the food at the Chinese restaurant also just near the park. Man Japanese unlike Koreans really know how to cook food from other countries...

Aside from that, some cool shopping and little noodle bars and drinking hole in the walls and a small, non descript beach.

If you have no reason to go there though except to get a visa and you want to go there as it's cheaper to get the ferry there instead of fly to Osaka or Tokyo - I'd opt for the latter two for a longer vacation or if you don't mind paying the airfare. But for a two day visa trip, perhaps extended to three days, it;s a cool, clean, open little city with very welcoming and friendly people.

I worked for 4 months in Fukui, Japan. In 2002.

It was fine.
Clean streets. Maintained buildings. Safe drivers. Variety of imported goods at reasonable prices. Everything Korea is not!!

But I was hankering after Korea..........something about this place gets under your skin. Japan, well, Fukui anyway, was dull compared to Korea.

And most of the other foreign teachers in Japan seemed to have very little community spirit. They seemed to avoid contact with other foreigners. Most were real Japanophiles who were doing their very best to avoid anything Western.

Never tried the level 10 curry--the bravest I got was level 7...maybe on my upcoming trip to Tokyo? But the last time I was in Fukuoka, I got the number 7 and was praying for a western toilet the next day (which I finally found)!

In Fukuoka, I heartily recommend Dazaifu for a day (or even half-day) trip. The scenery is as good as any you'll find in Kyoto. Skip the museum, though.

I did a year in Osaka. Loved it, but the job wasn't too good (Nova MM). I still have a special place in my heart for the country, and my Japanese is good enough to get by on when I travel there, so I'm in a good place!

btw, I still haven't found decent (actually, any)yakisoba in Korea--any tips?

the hottest i could handle was level 4. when i ordered that my jp girlfriend at that time gave me the "are you crazy!? do you know what that will do to your bum?" look Shocked . I told her i was a professional and i knew what i was getting into. My bum only hurt a little the next day...

level 7 hot must have been insane. I wonder how the staff reacted when you ordered that? you deserve to be in the coco ichiban hall of fame. Very Happy

Laughing It was business as usual for the over-enthusiastic staff, but I was thankful for the pitcher of water in front of me, put it that way!

I've had CoCo's 4, but would not recommend anything higher. Persoanl opinion. Who are we trying to impress? I really think when we up the heat of curry too much, we really lose the taste. I'm in Fukuoka right now for 3 weeks so CoCo Ichiban is on the menu.

As for tourism in this region, well yes Dazaifu is good but you could also head to Nagasaki. They have the lantern festival starting next week. Additionally, Beppu is excellent this time of year.

There are many hotels in Fukuoka for around Y5,000 a night. There's even a new(ish) hostel called Khoasan Fukuoka. Check out there site:

www.fukuoka-hostel.com

Remember to check out www.fukuoka-now.com and also pick up a copy of Fukuoka Now available at most foreigner-catering establishments.

Uber, where will you be in Japan?

I started this thread with an alterior motive, as I'm making a move over there myself in a city not all that far from Tokyo.
