| The suicide % & # for Canada in 1994, in the U of Adelaide link above (figure 19), was identical to Australia. (24 deaths per 100,000) Small towns with a population under 4,000 had higher suicide rates. And New Zealand was way ahead of both Oz & Ca. (39 deaths per 100,000). Tragic all round. |
Am I reading that right? Are you saying that small towns across the board are standardly high? |

I found this, in the 'Wesley Mission' link, in a prior thread:
| Quote: |
Economic and social change in Australia, particularly in the last 30 years have had a dramatic impact on farming and rural areas. In some cases, whole communities have suffered economic hardship and many are struggling to survive. Indeed, it is widely accepted that small communities, with populations of less than 10,000 are no longer economically viable, as we witness farm repossession, business and industry closures, the removal of medical and educational services, and the exodus of people to larger commercial centres.51
Such drastic changes have taken their toll on the people in farming communities, whose already high sense of alienation and isolation is exacerbated by financial insecurity and family breakdown. |
guido: your meaningful contribution to this thread, would be? You are not even Australian. |

| oh but im not Australian....I was just making the point of how all of you think you are experts when all you do is google and quote, I worked with at risk youths and have experienced the horrors of youth suicide in men between the ages of 18-25 in Australia personally. My point was that with so much well informed information and statistics supplied by you guys that there is no reason for me to enter this debate...I just reread it and it doesnt make sense to me either, oh well, I know what I mean. |

guido: Explain why you think the Flinders University in Adelaide / ABS statistics are flawed. And I had a friend who shot himself, when he was 16, when I was in highschool, and 2 other friends who took heroin overdoses, so don't play the "personal experience" card with me.

| My point is how you just google stats and rap off like you are all experts...I think everyone has a friend or knows someone who has killed themselves...I was talking about people that were inpatients where I worked but anyway have your day wnka...you win this arguement..your stats are impressive. |

Newsflash for guido!
All credible Universities, stress the need for reliable , academic sources, (not hearsay), which is what I have done in this thread. Virtually all of the 17,000 ESL teachers currently in Korea, have gone through this same process. ie, citations with credible authors, or credible links, in order to pass, & graduate. You do have a degree, right? Or are you an illegal?

By your own admission in a subsequent thread, you are NOT Australian. I suspect you're British.
2. You have nothing meaningful to contribute to the discussion so far
3.
| Quote: |
| I was talking about people that were inpatients where I worked. |
None of my friends gave any warning, whatsoever.
4. If the above is true, then speaking from personal experience, what percentage of youth suicides, give some warning or seek help / anti depressants? FU (that's Flinders University, btw, not what you think), quote:
| Quote: |
| Admission to a hospital because of intentional self-injury is about ten times more common than death, due to suicide at ages 15 to 24 years. |
Does that ring true, in your alleged personal experience? Now is your big chance, to contribute meaningfully! |

ODing is unfortunate, but I don't think you can call them instances of suicide. Did they, or does anyone who ODs do so intentionally? |

The 2 kids I referred to, who OD'd, were British immigrants to Melbourne, a boy & a girl in their teens, whose parents were not exactly role models. The father was an alhoholic, eg. But a woman I use to know at my old workplace, threw herself in front of a train. Does that count?
I've also read reports that conjecture, that perhaps many single auto accidents, are, in fact, suicides. Car slams into brickwall. Sole occupant dies. That type of thing. |
